It's that time of year again, folks! I know a bunch of us are planning fall marathons, so I was wondering...

How many have you run thus far?

When and where is The Big Day?

Overall, how's your training going?

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills:
Tempowork:
Speedwork:
Long runs:
Consistency:
Pace/practice racing:
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.):

Any tips for the first timers?

Final comments/surprising observations?

How many have you run thus far?

5

When and where is The Big Day?

not this year or next or the next, maybe the next

Overall, how's your training going?

for my half, okay, training this year is going very well.

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: 3
Tempowork: 3
Speedwork: 3
Long runs: 0
Consistency: 8
Pace/practice racing: 5
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): 0

Any tips for the first timers?

enjoy the experience. Focus on finishing not the clock.
training is the best way. Give at least 6 months of a solid base and 4-6 months of focused training. Follow a program that you think will work and stick to it.

Final comments/surprising observations?

none.

How many have you run thus far?

2, 3 if you include the marathon at the end of IM.

When and where is The Big Day?

I'm repeating IM Florida in November. I will run Miami in Janruary

Overall, how's your training going?

I'm in the best shape of my life. I have completed all of my scheduled workouts and I have maintained a positive attitude. On track so far.

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: None
Tempowork: 8
Speedwork: 8
Long runs: 10+, I love em'
Consistency: 9
Pace/practice racing: 8. I have not gotten a first place trophy yet.
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): 8. I am adding a lot of muscle this year. I have been doing shoulders and abs in hope of decreasing my swim time.

Any tips for the first timers?

I think it was Jr that wrote somethiing in nolefan85's post. It cannot be said any better, ever.

Final comments/surprising observations?
If my training contnues like it is. I'm going to Hawaii next October.

When and where is The Big Day?
Philly....may run FC in 7 weeks for training?????
Overall, how's your training going?
I've had a rough summer...I'm hoping that my current 10k times do not reflect my marathon ability as they are off 2 minutes from last year.

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: 1-----only when I'm out of town...we don't have hills and I refuse to do on a treadmill
Tempowork: 5---a little slower than last year.....but plan to build up

Speedwork: uh, no
Long runs: getting there
Consistency: 6......consistently bad......but improving
Pace/practice racing: not yet.
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): 2

Any tips for the first timers? patience, patience. The first half should feel quite easy.....you need to save your mental energy for the second half

Final comments/surprising observations?

the marathon is so much more mentally demanding than it is physically.

How many have you run thus far? zero

When and where is The Big Day? The Akron Road Runner Marathon, Saturday October 2

Overall, how's your training going? It's going great. I have been training steadily, no injuries, eating sensibly!

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: 10 I can't avoid them. They are pretty much part of every run.
Tempowork: 3 I have done a little. Use races for this.
Speedwork: Aren't hills speedwork in disguise? So, either 1 or 10.
Long runs: 8 I've run a 17 & 18, I think I have 3 more long runs scheduled. I like my long runs. I look forward to them.
Consistency: 8 Okay, maybe I should back the consistency down. I haven't been keeping up with my weight training like I would like to. But running comes first now.
Pace/practice racing: 5 I was a bit disapointed with my last half-marathon, I thought I could do it a bit faster. But my legs weren't exactly fresh. I have a 1/2 marathon next weekend (on hills) that I am not expecting a fast time. This 1/2 marathon is practice work for the full marathon (I have to keep telling myself this.)
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): 3 I love to work out with weights, but balancing runs over 4 miles and weights and getting home at a decent hour. Maybe I should go back to weight training at home. Maybe I shouldn't worry about it right now.

Any tips for the first timers? I am the first timer. I am anxiously awaiting all your tips here. Really, I am!

Final comments/surprising observations? On "other boards" there is always the person who wants to run the marathon on 2 days of running a week, or wants to train in 5 weeks and run 7.30 miles. I always like to read those threads. Maybe I am a bit older than these posters, but as I have ramped up the mileage, there's a big difference in a 17 mile run than running an 8 miler. It seemed to change for me after about the 15 mile mark. I feel I need to properly prepare for my marathon. I've even thought maybe I was attempting too much too soon. But then, I also thought, I'm doing well on my long runs, just keep everything flowing the same way. I like my long runs. If it ever became just such a chore and I hated doing them, (which is different than just having a bad long run) then I would stop training for the marathon. But running has become such an outlet for me, it's my time to think, reflect, and pour nervous energy into. It's helped me become a healthy and strong individual again. I like doing races and seeing other like-minded folks out there.

How many have you run thus far? one

When and where is The Big Day? NYCM 11/7, Philly 11/21

Overall, how's your training going? Fantastic. Started early to get a better base for high volume. Everything going according to plan.

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: 10
Tempowork: 7 (races only)
Speedwork: 2
Long runs: 10
Consistency: 9
Pace/practice racing: 7 (slow in summer, waiting for fall to test)
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): 8 (tri training helps)

Any tips for the first timers? The training's the proof. If you can get through it, you'll be sitting pretty on the big day. But nothing is guaranteed; go easy and go slow. Some may disagree, but I feel when you cross that finish line, you will feel like a different person because you WILL BE a different person. When it all comes together, don't be surprised by the overflow of emotions you will feel. Most importantly, enjoy your first one. You'll never get that back again. Thoroughly live the experience.

Final comments/surprising observations? I'm amazed at how much easier the training is this year, despite summer heat and humidity. Maybe because I've gone through it before, maybe because I'm in much better shape. But it's really a lot easier, and recoveries are faster.

When and where is The Big Day? I'm planning long term...Having trouble deciding whether to do the Adidas Vancouver International Marathon (May 1st 2005) www.adidasvanmarathon.ca or Royal Victoria www.royalvictoriamarathon.com/ on Vancouver Island, a Boston Qualifier (Oct. 2005) Right now I'm training for shorter distances including a couple of halfs in the fall...hopefully these will help me assess time goals for the big one

Overall, how's your training going? Great so far (well, for the current race season I'm training for) I've been reaping the benefits of periodizing my training, structuring my workouts, building a solid mileage base, and establishing a regular schedule of stretching and strength/core training. I've noticed that I'm able to handle the harder workouts alot better and recover alot quicker from them. Also I have remained relatively injury-free despite my current rigorous training schedule.

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: 9
Tempowork: 6-7 (just started true tempowork/LT runs 3 weeks ago)
Speedwork: 8 -seeing some improvement in my interval splits recently
Long runs: 10
Consistency: 9
Pace/practice racing: 8 (did one 10k 3 weeks ago with a new PB), the next practice race will be a 15k trail in mid September
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): 8 Been doing lots of core strengthening, weights, and stretching (2-3X a week) with the help of a personal trainer plus swimming 2-3X a week. I'm getting alot stronger now plus a lean look (with a 6 pack!)
Any tips for the first timers?
I'll be posting a few threads later this year once I start planning things out for 2005 to get some advice from you guys...isn't it a bit too early now?

When and where is The Big Day?
Oct 10, Chicago
Nov 7 (or something) San Antonio (not racing it, using it as a long run)
Dec. 11 - Sunmart 50k (Pff...c'mon, think of the food)
May - The Pig

Overall, how's your training going?
Good, training is my favorite part!

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: 8
Tempowork: 10
Speedwork: 8
Long runs: 10 (my absolute favorite. The longer, the better.)
Consistency: 7- this week, I was a horrible slacker.
Pace/practice racing: Pace runs, 8, no racing.
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): weights 5, I tend to not be as consistent when training

Any tips for the first timers? Forget about your time, just enjoy it! Trust your training, it's the hard part.
Final comments/surprising observations? Keeping a higher base mileage several months before training seems to have helped.

How many have you run thus far? One.

When and where is The Big Day? October 10, Chicago.

Overall, how's your training going? It will be better now, with the side distractions of achilles, dental, and Colorado trip resolved.

How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: 3. Not a lot around here, but getting more in than I did preparing for my first marathon.
Tempowork: 4.
Speedwork: 7. This is improving because of explanation above.
Long runs: 6. Ditto.
Consistency: 6. Ditto.
Pace/practice racing: 7 or 8. Ditto.
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): 10. Loads more of weights and bike work than for the first 'thon. Also pool running and swimming which I had not done at all for Mad City.

Any tips for the first timers? Stay true to your pace - the adrenalin of doing your first one will naturally speed you up a bit, which is OK. Do NOT be intimidated if a whole lot of people are passing you - it's you against the course, not you against them. Take in the experience and have FUN.
Final comments/surprising observations? Don't try this at home. Mr. Green

How many have you run thus far?
863.38 miles
When and where is The Big Day?
Not Until February - About 26 weeks of training for this one baby!
Overall, how's your training going?
Slowly coming back to where I feel I should be
How would you rate the quality of your training? Scale of 1-10, 1 being what? and 10 being w00t!:
Hills: "what is a hill?"
Tempowork: 2
Speedwork: 3
Long runs: 5 - Slowly coming back
Consistency: 3 Just biding my time until the summer time heat waves break
Pace/practice racing: 3 Not happy but I know when the weather breaks it should get better
Supplementary stuff (weights, etc.): 2 I have started to try and do push-ups and sit-ups every day now.

Any tips for the first timers? Build your base slowly and make sure you get in those long runs. LSD cures most problems for first marathons.

Final comments/surprising observations?

Have Fun with it and hopefully find someone to traing with. That will help you on those days you don't want to hit the roads.
