Posted: 08/21/04 - 12:47 Post subject: Marathon-Travel-Finish-Medal Question
This fall I'm heading to Dublin Ireland for 10 days for vacation and to visit some good friends, during that time the Dublin Marathon will be held, and while I'm in no shape to to train for it to finish it in a good time.
I can walk it.
One of my goals when I started doing marathon was to do one beyond North America. But my motavation for doing one has more to do with the desire to say I did Dublin and walked it to make my total number of marathon five.
It easy to say just find another race somewhere else overseas and train for it the way you would like to finish it in a decent time. But right now I know I'mk going there and figure why not get it out of the way.
The other selling/leaning point is Dublin has all the folks that represent "Team in Training" and this race is a really big deal.
This race is about finishing and not time.
Suggestions???????

Do it.
Your last sentence says it best about darn near each and every marathon - it is about finishing. The faster the time, the more icing on the cake.
'sides, if you have four of these under your belt already, you're probably in better shape than you may be giving yourself credit for.
Do Dublin. All the best to you.

I agree with g. Do it! I think you'll be in better shape than you think. Besides, you said "this fall" - at least you have SOME time to prepare.

Is there another segment to the race such as a relay team that you can join. This past April I was no where near ready to run the OKC marathon so 4 other runners from the "other forum" and I formed a relay team so we all got to participate without any injuries. We had a good time to.
Walking a marathon can be as difficult if you are not prepared to walk that distance as running it.

Are you going to be happy just walking the marathon?
I have nothing against walking in a marathon ie. drink stops, pacing yourself etc.,but I disagree with everyone else. It is a race, that's why they time the event.
My 93 year old Aunt could walk the marathon with a bag of cement on her back but refuses to do it because she hasn't trained for it.

I have to disagree with you phar lap. It is both a race and a time event. For those racing, they get to do their thing. For all others, it depends why people are participating. As long as anyone comes in within the allotted time, whether they race, run, skip, do backyard flips the entire distance or walk they have successfully completed the course. If the only purpose of marathons and races today was to "race" once the winner crossed the line everyone could simply stop whereever they are and go home. No need for age, division or any other awards. One and only one person can actually win the race. All others right down to the last person into the finish chute are there for show.
Running races under the "race" only scenario occurs in the Olympics and collegiate athletic events as well as a few other areas. But for almost all races that the masses are allowed into the only requirement to be declared a winner outside of whatever personal goals someone has, is to finish within the allotted time.
If Scorch can walk it within the allocated time by the race rules, more power to him. Also walking the marathon requires a different set of muscles than running it. I'm running a marathon in a couple of weeks, but I don't think I could walk it, although as slow as I will be running it, some may indeed assume I walked it.

I say go for it. One of my goals is to go to Ireland, and run. It won't have to be in a race but just run there. Marathons to me are all about finishing. It doesn't matter how you get there, just finish!

I see both sides of this arguement.
The question is: Are you gonna be happy walking the thon? Nothing else matters. With 4 in the bag, I cannot see you walking this marathon and being proud at the end.

Thanks for the wonderful comments and it may suprised you how much of a struggle this decision really is.
The undertrained part on me is saying its you train for these things things for a reason, and maybe you could eek out a plan.
Trouble is I know I'm not ready and I'm fooling myself the moment someone zips past me and I decide to give chace.....if for only 100 meters.
However I think just walking it would be as much fun for nothing less than seeing the city on foot in a way you can't see the city with all the traffic.
These comments have really helped, thanks to all.

I think walking it would rock. Some of us lack the ability to run anymore. I think some people who would love to walk it get intimidated by the fear that the "runners" will look down on them.
In my mind, if you can do it walking (which would still be very difficult) it is still a huge accomplishment.
