This seems to be a political stance that both sides are taking. However, I tend to scream "yeah, right" at the TV each time I hear it. A candidate may make certain aspects of our nation "safer" but to say "I will make our country safe" seems like a real joke to me.

I don't know about a joke, but it is an awfully bold statement for either party to make.....

Terrorism is like jihad - unstoppable. If a someone wants to harm us badly enough, they'll find a way regardless of how "safe" our government tries to make us. Remember how quickly a few box cutters changed the world.

With reference to 9-11, I assume you don't mean on airplanes too, right?

Or in bars. Or at sporting events. Or in malls.

I believe pilots should be trained and armed.

Hence why pilots shouldn't be trained with weaponry to protect those on board. Shocked

So if someone smuggled a gun onboard a plane, you wouldn't want the pilot to have a gun to defend the cockpit as a last line of defense. (That isn't flight safety?)

Else, the plane becomes a giant missle aimed at a large building ala 9/11.

For the most part in the United States, you should be more worried about driving to work, cancer, and whether or not you're going to be shot at a convenience store in the middle of the night than terrorism.

The attack on the USS Cole, the WTC bombings, 9/11, the Anthrax mailings and the Unibomber mailings are pretty few and far between than living in countries were terrorist attacks happen several times a day.

Terrorists are not only middle easterners. Terrorists don't only use airplanes. Terrorists can be anybody and to just about any degree. Unless there is a unamimous agreement for everyone to live in peace and harmony, making your life entirely safe from terrorism (much less an entire country) is absolutely ludicrous.

nope. That's what "someone else" is for. If the person makes it to the cockpit, then that's person's well-trained and knows where the gun is and it would just be one more weapon for him/her to use and the pilot is busy flying the plane. If pilots carry weapons.....terrorists would know. I don't think it a responsibility that we should not "tab" on pilots. Their job is to fly a plane safely and they've put many hours in that alone, why not have another person that is an expert in one area do his job? That person's job is to make sure the plane does not become a flying missile. If everyone else would do their jobs, the pilot could do his.

No, I'd want the pilot to be flying the plane.

true.....they are few, but we shouldn't allow for the possibility. I just don't think it's a pilots duty and I do think it's a weapon that would do more harm than good. Convicts are brought to hospitals for surgery, should doctors or nurses be armed "just in case"???? heck, no. Should the convict be escorted by someone trained in security. heck, yes.
