For those here that live in the Wis area or ran the
Mad-City marathon in the past I have a question.
Looking at my latest copy of Triathlete Magazine and
their coverage of IM Wis they mentioned a rolling
bike course.
So my ? (two) is this, is the marathon (Mad-City) hilly, and
if so how bad, and reading the description of the marathon
there are parts we run on the sidewalk?
Thanks in advance.

Try a drinking question instead, like, "Have you ever puked on a sidewalk in Madison?"

After mile 20 you turn into an arboretum of sorts, Morph. If the mosquitos don't get you first, the rolling hills will. After getting out of this greenery, you run a mile or two towards the park. Once you get to the park you're on a cement trail. No sidewalks that I recall though. Anyone else?

I'm not Coach. And I don't even get to go to the State Finals that weekend either.

The reason I can't go is the State Track meet is that weekend in Rapid City. Although, if I do a crappy job coaching track this spring, that weekend could be open...

okay--piece of cake!!!!! But of course when I did the 1/2 I was a northside (aka hill country) San Antonio resident and comparitively speaking the hills were not a factor. Yes, there are "hills'---they are definitely "rolling"--nothing that you have to change gears for. The biggest "bump" that I complained about for not having a better time was the "bike ramp". It is an overpass to get over a busy intersection and it is a spiral type climb and descent....so, yeah, you do have to ease the speed here. It was my PR course until two months ago...so it can't be too tough.

Gosh, I ran the full in 2001 and I don't remember a hell of lot.....but I believe there was actually a patch of sidewalk in Warner park, a small amount of sidewalk (10 steps) as you approach the bike ramp, and the finish-----which was due to construction that year. Also Joel.....I'm getting confused because I've run the 1/2, full, and Meriters which all go through the zoo.....but isn't there alot of sidewalk running when you go through vilas....looks like they are calling that part a bike path???? seems to me I remember that area as more of a sidewalk from the Meriter nurses run.
Hills? don't remember much the first half as a hill. Soon after the 13 mile marker theres a little steady climb as you head towards camp randall. Then when you enter Arbor drive there are gentle ups and downs.
I would have to say that you shouldn't expect PRs on this course.

Keith.......IM WI put out a big scare about the hills of Madison.....which, yep, the outskirts of Madison is VERY hilly. The bike portion of IM was hardly in Madison at all.......the hills they ranted and raved about were in Verona......the marathon stays pretty much on Madison east, north and central. When you head to the s/sw side of Madison Mt horeb, verona, fitchburg you start talking MAJOR peaks and valleys. It's all a matter of perspective.....residents from south WI will tell you it's nothing......north WI will then you it's something.

Thanks for all the info.
I'm leaning tward running the 1/2 marathon but training to run 26.2 miles.
The map for the 1/2 and full aren't very good so I'm sending off the directions so get a 3D map with hills to get a better ideal.

Born in Madison, raised in Fitchburg, I can attest that the hills in Madison are nothing. Believe me.

born in NE WI/lived in Madtown for 9 years. Rode fifty mile tour in Marinette county six months pregnant---piece of pancake. Two weeks later rode 35 in west madison and my husband had to push me and bike up the hill by Elver Park (I couldn't make it up the hill and I was incapable of getting off my bike). I say they are definitely something!
