First off I'd like to say I'm horribly disappointed. But that's OK, it was exactly what I expected. My stress fracture of the lower right leg late in February had taken my training to all but nothing basically. Since Mid March I probably had 2- 5mile training runs, and lots of training on the elliptical at the gym. I struggled with even doing the race at all. If I did run I knew a PR wasn't possible, if I didn't give it a shot I'd still be disappointed. My real job was to be there for Gretriever making his marathon debut!
So I woke early feeling pretty good and no pain in the SF area although my ankle had been very stiff and sore the past week or so. I decided I had to try it. The weather was calling for some thunderstorms and mid 60's. My PR is 2:28 something and given the situation I wanted to finish in 3 hours figuring even if I walked lots I'd prolly make it. Mile 1 was just over 11 min. The next 2 or 3 were about the same. Then came the rain, thunder, lightning, and even some small hail briefly. I really have had no expierence with this type of weather and with everything else going on at that point I just wanted to finish. I didn't walk at all until about mile 8 or so then it was run/walk the rest of the way to the finish line. My time was somewhere around 3:50 ish I believe. I didn't even look but when I remembered to stop my watch, that's what it said. It was pouring when I finished and for some reason hubby and I didn't plan accordingly, he was also soaked. Although I wanted to stay and be there when gretriever crossed the line, hubby and Library Chick convinced me to get the shuttle back to the hotel.
I was so cold and sore that when the elevator opened and I saw the hot tub by the pool, I immediately began to undress........shoes, socks, shirt and then sploosh..........in I went. Hubby was right behind picking up my stuff saying "you can't do that in your shorts and sport bra.........." I said "watch me!" It felt good too.
Other than the race expierience it was a good time. Lots of laughs. Some of the highlights.....
I got vinegar in my eye at dinner and couldn't see for 2 hours.
I got stuck in the elevator just before the race started, or so I thought.
apparently you need to push a button if you want it to go somewhere after the door shuts.
I couldn't find my shoes when getting ready for the race and I was sh*ttin', yes I was!
Although he didn't push me in front of a car, I did step into the path of one on my own I guess. And Gretriever followed me!
And finally I tripped on my own feet and nearly fell in the toilet in our room.
Oh, and I almost forgot.......... right about half way through the course there it was, right in the middle of the road................A TAMPON, no kidding Gretriever saw it too!
Now about Gretriever. He said I could tell you he finished and is rumored to be having a good time He will report tomorrow.

Although you are rightfully unhappy with the turnout, I congratulate you on finishing. The conditions - physically, and weather-wise left little to be desired. I am disappointed that we did not meet up. I was on the fence on running at all, and kinda jumped in (just the 10K) at the last moment.
Best of luck to you in your recovery and I hope we can meet up another time!

I hope they gave you more than a medal and t-shirt for finishing that one! I admire you for sticking with it. I would have DNF'd, and then hit the hot tub. Hurt, hail, thunderstorms, and being wet and cold...finising is a huge accomplishment.

Hey.
Way to stay in there and run that race anyway.
Your injury and the weather alone would have kept me home.
You'll have better races.
Now...get yourself better and take care of that stress fracture!
Great Job anyway!

Sounds like less than ideal race conditions..in fact they sound really nasty! Congrats on persevering through all that!

sorry to hear you've been screwed dealing with stress fracture; i had no idea.
way to finish in spite of really cruddy conditions for you. you're great for being there
and for having the ability to laugh at stuff too. i hope the SF is soon a distant memory and your training can resume.

Deb, you never cease to amaze me--how friggin' funny you can be no matter what happens. You rock, baby--for hanging in and keepin' on....and being an inspiration to everyone whose path you cross. Now, LET YOURSELF HEAL UP and you'll be back in no time!!!

live from the bunker that is work...
.... only here for a moment to say I am alive and well (sorry, some of you lose ). As predicted last week, our home computer is not working, and I am about to be submerged into two days' training. I may be able to fire off a short report during the noon hour (longer we have off, the longer the report), or from the library tonight. If no progress on the home front, full report Friday at the latest.
Must go, but I will verify the tampon story - Maddie, were you in Madison this weekend (it was a rocker launcher ).
