Is it just me, or is there someone else here who thinks the Starting Line forum is on a steady decline?
I know the forum is for new runners with all sorts of questions, but honestly!!!

The MP3's and Motivational Music thread to date has had 20 replies and 179 views.
The Cannabis thread to date has had 11 replies and 214 views.

Then we have what I consider the legitimate questions;
How often should I speed train? and, How much is too much?
A mere 6 replies to each.

ISN'T THIS SUPPOSED TO BE A RUNNING FORUM?

Come on you more experienced people who help with replies, pick up your game!

I agree! Razz

I certainly don't have problems with other threads non-training related in this forum (ala the mp3 one), in fact i love them, i just think that we should be getting more replies for the actual running questions

welllllll,

as the initiator of the mp3 thread: the info helped me run faster, longer, and more often because i am now more motivated...

as the initiator of the speed thread: the info helped me run faster, longer, and more often because i am now more motivated....

to be honest, robp responded to my question reference how to increase my speed and then coachmarkos gave his "thumbs-up" reference the program robp suggested; what else is there for someone to say......

and phar lap and exsprint: did either one of YOU respond to either thread/question i asked?????

PLUS: it is the newby BB and i figger that most people are newbies and dont have the experience of coach or robp; so maybe they are smart enough not to give advice when they know they arent qualified....

i know that i have been running almost a year and am just learning HOW to run; so even though i look at all the starting line posts, i dont consider myself qualified to answer too many questions.....BUT i can give advice to help others to find good music to give them an uplift in their motivation (again something neither of you did....)

plese dont take this as mean-spirited, i am respectfully responding to ur post with my opinion.....if u see things differently please explain your opinions to me....

Kel don't take my post personally. You can post what you like, and people do on these forums. All I'm saying is the response to Mp3's, motivational music and the cannabis thread, far out weighed what I consider questions on running/training.
I agree that music is a great motivator, but how can you do justice to both your music and running at the same time?

No Kel, I did not reply to your 'speed thread' but I did read it and thought 'robp' answered it adequetly, hence I did not reply.
NB. The number of views to the speed post as opposed to Mp3's and cannabis posts, which was the point of my article
As far as the Mp3 thread goes I consider they have about as much to do with running as crotching sheep. Or dope smoking sheep for that matter.

Again I agree with you that its a forum for newcommers to our sport. I read all the replies to the 'running questions' when I find time and I respect the fact that we come from a wide variety of experience and backgrounds all having differing opinions. I may not always agree with some of the replies but I respect that they have taken the time out to answer.
All power to you for you suggesting music to motivate people if that what it takes to get people to run, well and good. I just see that it that it has nothing what so ever to do with running.

I hope that one day you find that the running in itself is all the motivation you need.

phar lap;

i (and other runners i speak with) use music to augment their running. i think there are many people that run simply for the enjoyment of running, not for the training aspect....as such, music makes running to them more enjoyable.

i use music to keep me motivated because now that i am running with a certain goal in mind, some of the enjoyment has lessened....i am working towards a specific goal within a specific time line....as such it is somewhat of a stressor (and we all have those in our lives).

i disagree with ur assertion that music has nothing to do with running. as i posted before, i consider myself a beginning runner (hence the posts in this section and not the others), however, i agree that at the upper levels of running (where perhaps you are now), you might eschew music as a hindrance to your overall effort and ability run .....

in part i do agree with you (as far as the music/running connection): on the days i run for time, i do not use an mp3, because it interferes with my ability to "tune in" with my body (and receive feedback) while running.

perhaps as i make the climb from one level of running to the next i might also view music as not being needed, however, as i am not at that point yet; music is a very valuable motivational tool for me to use.

I've even read about elite runner's who still use music as a motivator (they wouldn't use it for all of their runs though). This is more a philosophical difference then a skill level difference.

For me, I'm more like Phar when it comes to mixing music while running. Personally, I think music distracts me from all the things I enjoy most about running (enjoying the outdoors, 'listening' to my body, meditating about life). But I know that everyone gets something different out of this sport.

The only time I would definately say you should leave the headphones at home is when you're running on city streets/sidewalks or during a race (some may disagree with the second).

Just my !

I respond to some of the posts but still feel uncomfortable giving advice. I'm not the most technically sound runner around here and don't want to steer someone the wrong way.

There are those who put music and running hand in hand and those who do not. Plain and simple.

A good part of my life is built around music, so it goes without saying how important it has been, is, and always will be when it comes to running.

I must agree, the one thing this site seems to lack is responses to running, especially for the newbies. I think for alot of us, it's become a place to get away, and that's why we spend most of our time in RR, for example. It's still no excuse, though. If we want this site to grow, we need to do our part to help out the 'youngins' so that they feel like sticking around.

I admit to slacking on this. I need to check these posts more often. I may not know much, but how do I know if I can help or not if I don't look to begin with? I will try to step up to the plate if you will! :pointing finger at everyone: Mr. Green

I don't feel I know enough about running to give out much advice. Especially when the questions get more technical ( at least to me) about running certain repeats on track, or how to get faster for a x country meet. I never ran track in high school/college so I have zilch experience in these catergories.
I also am not really comfortable with alot of running terms, so it's hard for me to respond to a post that I might know something about--like running downhill--and be able to tell someone they need to shorten or lengthen their stride for example.
