Posted: 03/13/04 - 08:25 Post subject: MIL appears to be stabilized...
I finally found out what sent her to the hospital, she has sepsis. For those of you who don't know what that is:
Sepsis can be most simply defined as a spectrum of clinical conditions caused by the immune response of a host to infection or trauma and characterized by systemic inflammation and coagulation (Mesters, 1996a; Wheeler, 1999). It ranges from a systemic inflammatory response to organ dysfunction to multiple organ failure, and ultimately death for many patients.
I talked to BIL yesterday and she was due for surgery at 1pm, and maybe not even surgery, he wasn't sure, but they were going to drain some fluid from her liver. They were very concerned with liver and kidney function at that time, and were waiting to get her full of antibiotics & new blood before risking the procedure. Her temp was low from the time she was admitted (monday afternoon) until yesterday morning, and her BP is still on the low side. At the time I spoke to Robby, she was sedated as she was on a ventilator and kept trying to remove things...
Anyhoo, John told me last night that she is faring a bit better. So there is great relief here. I'm pretty certain that as long as her condition improves, he won't go to Houston.
I wanted to thank you all for your prayers and well-wishes. Please keep them coming. She is probably in for another lengthy hospital stay, and even though she is stable now, she's probably got a ways to go before she is out of the woods.
