I was just emailed this story from a good friend of mine. I cut and pasted the email (just as it was sent - typos and no capitalization included).

holy cow! what a scene! it was a nice day today, sunny, mid-70's. a perfect day for a stroll down to the city market for lunch. i made the trek at approximately 11:30. (maybe 12:30 your time) everything was pretty normal. had a nice shrimp salad, sat up on the balcony and did a little people watching. always fun, eh?

i decided to have a stroll around monument circle before heading back to the office and as i left the market. it happened! the humanity! out of nowhere. comes the most terrifying, menacing (are you ready for this)?.......groundhog, you ever did see! he hurled his huge bulk (he had to weigh at least seven or eight pounds) out into the middle of ohio street and stopped! (obviously trying to decide who his victim would be). a quick thinking marion county sherrif stopped all traffic and tried to gain control of the situation, but little did she know, the deviousness this creature of the wilds intended to unleash on our fair city!

in the blink of an eye, the creature targeted it's prey and in a flash he was there, wreaking havoc with one of the city's long standing institutions, the hotdog vendor! it was total choas! obviously this vendor had never seen a groundhog before, and the commotion she created turned heads a block away! now the tables were turning. it was now also pretty obvious that the groundhog had never seen (or HEARD) a panicked hotdog vendor before! he took cover under the cart. it was a standoff! crowds gathered, but not too close. the sherrif was moving in. reinforcments arrived. (the sheriffs office and marion county jail are right across the street). it wasn't looking good for the ground hog. then the was this bussy brown flash and he was across the pavement and into the shrubbery to the west of the city county building. he's escaped some of the cities finest!

i can only imagine him sitting in his burrow on the edge of a cornfield just outside of town, city map in hand, plaanig his next attack on the unwitting citizens of indianapolis, but i would bet my last dollar, he won't mess with another hotdog vendor!

;o)

the preceding story is true and actually happened about thirty minutes ago. never a dull moment in this town, eh?

LOL

Groundhogs are fun little critters... until they're raiding your garden.

I hate groundhogs. They are evil.

I would donate money, but I'm spending too much traveling to meet Riff Raffers myself.

When you come to Indy, send me a PM. Maybe we can have a little RR gathering in Indy.

This sounds like a true "city slicker" story. Some poor confused and likely VERY scared groundhog makes an appearance and its a news item.

I run at the Saratoga State Park in NY. I see two groundhogs on a regular basis: one where we meet for our weekly runs and the other by the spring water fountain while I'm filling up my bottles. Tha's two that I see on a regular basis.

On the other hand if we saw some big city sewer rat at the park, it would be news.
