You may have to go back to the old computer to get them. iTunes stores your music on your computer, not in their system. But it makes no sense why your iPod erased all the old tunes. That is crazy. If you authorized your new computer to use iTunes, and installed the iPod software on the new computer, it just doesn't make sense why that would happen.
Apple customer service rocks though so call them first. When we were already moved here, I realized that Kramer still had access to my account on his machine. Apple deauthorized all computers for me and let me start fresh. Just tell them your situation and maybe they'll give you back all the songs (they do know what you've purchased), esp. if they deauthorize the other computer (which, at some point, you should do if this is in your name and storing your credit card info).
Sorry I cannot be of more help. Losing tunes sucks!!
