I have just started riding the bike. I mean I learned how to do it long time ago. But now, I have decided to train and maybe some day even compete. Now, some of my friends say that I should cycle only long rides while the others claim that shorter ones are better. What should I do, long or short ride?

I would say, long AND short rides. To be a complete athlete you have to be good at both. You would be incomplete and unable to compete successfully if you only train long or short rides. You must be able to sustain long rides but also capable of short sprints and speedy finish. If you ask more experienced colleagues they will tell you the same thing.
