I have a feeling that what you're trying to say Genie, is the same thing that elkid is trying to say.

The act of running, that repetitive motion of left, right, left, right... has a tendency to 'tighten' the musculature and connective tissue. Hence the stretching and yoga activities.

Folks have a tendency to combine terminology such as shorten for tight muscles, and lengthen for flexible/loose muscles. The actual length of the musculature doesn't change, just it's ability to move through it's range of motion. In other words, stretching your 13 inch hamstring muscle will not lengthen it to 13.5 inches.

That's where I was going, I can't speak for elkid but that's how I interpreted what she was asking also. I think you hit it with the terminology thing, "tighten" fits better with what I was asking and I think it answers her question too (?) that's why I added flexibility, that's what I remember the tie-in was for yoga and stretching exercises. So the example with Demi, you could say her muscles are looser and possibly more flexible, which is why her legs look smaller, perhaps from not training so intensely? I know she was pretty into weight training at one point.

I guess, then, the weight training we are doing, if any of us are doing any, I know I am, should be more higher reps/lower weights than bulk hauling?
(I tend to be Ms. Ego in the gym and lift as much weight as my legs can handle, which for a girl is pretty heavy, so it's probably no wonder my quads pop when I get going on a program Embarassed )

I've always suggested to my clients/members that don't want to look like Arnold, to use lighter weights with higher reps. Making sure that the weight is heavy enough to make lifting it difficult for the last 2-3 reps, as opposed to halfway through the reps.

In this case, more isn't necessarily better.

And from what I've read/heard about Ms. Moore, she isn't doing the heavy weights that she was for those other movies, which is probably why her legs are smaller in circumference.

Damn!! And I was getting to like the expressions on the little squirrely dudes' faces at the gym when I hop onto the leg press after them and ADD a plate or two..... Twisted Evil

Tough decision....feed the ego....reduce the tree trunks....hmmmm...

Must go ponder this over a protein drink Wink

I would also venture to say that because of this past weekend, you are either unable or unwilling to listen to anything I have to offer. That, of course, would be your loss.

I will answer, in a professional and helpful manner to the best of my ability, any question concerning fitness, no matter who asks. But just because you're angry with me, don't discount or patronize or condescend any answer I might give.

Yes, my loss indeed. I will no doubt suffer. I will refrain from discussing the irony and hypocrisy of the above.

Thank you genie for accurately interpreting what I was trying to say. I discussed this with my MD last night. I will go with his opinion and those of other running forums where people don't attack your intelligence for not using the proper terminology.

So, out of curiosity because I wonder about this too, what did your doc suggest to do?

elkid, I never attacked your intelligence. My responses were an attempt to explain the differences in terminology which has used by the majority of the population, not just you.

Your responses, of course, have been both snide and sarcastic.

I find it sad that I feel I have to not only defend my professional experience, but also alter my responses in any thread due to the mean-spiritedness of your responses.

I'm not really sure how a thread like this could get so 'mean' but it has no place in here.

I'm not taking sides but it seems that a grudge is in effect. Please work this out...NOW. Nobody needs to see this.

FWIW, I have always found flarunner's advice to be both very useful and right on.
