I did this race last year, so I knew that it was flat and fast. Temps were in the mid-50s and about 250 people racing. My definition of a perfect race.

Lined up near the front and talked to a couple of guys. Found a guy that was going for 18 even, which was what I was hoping for too. I decided I'd stick with him.

Gun goes off and it's off into the darkness. It was easy to keep my eye on my rabbit because he wore a white singlet. I let him pull up about 10 yds. and I hung with him for the first mile. 5:33 for mi. 1 (which is a PR). I knew at that point I had gone out too fast and just tried to hold on.

I felt my pace slipping a little, but I wasn't losing much ground to the 2 guys in front of me. Mile 2 in 6:18.

I knew I had to pick up the pace if I was going to make it in 18 flat. I pushed a little harder in mile 3, but I was still sucking the first mile. Push it up just a hair to finish the last 1.1 mi. in 6:48 (6:11 pace).

Final time of 18:37, which is a PR for me. I wish I could say I was really excited about that time, but I really had my hopes set on coming close to or surpassing the 18 min. mark. I managed to get 12th overall and 3rd in my age group.

BTW - The winning time was 14:57. Shocked

Wait a minute...18:37 was a PR, yet you wanted to hit a sub 18? What could you have done to shave 37 seconds off from this race????

baby steps, bro. You ran one heckuva race so celebrate!

well.... you came back on that 3rd mile....so I'm thinking that the 5:33 was so terribly bad. It no doubt affected mile 2 some.....but then again, it wasn't too long ago that if you ran a 5:33 mile you'd be hunkered down on the track gasping for air!! I think your last mile just shows "okay mile 1 was too fast for now....some day perfect". I wouldn't talk it out too much slower than that PH. Maybe 5:45 next race for mile 1. I'm thinking, sub 18 next month. and I'll be very jealous Mr. Green
