Comments: experience and proper safety gear can't overcome bad judgement. This took place on a very steep, narrow, rural two-lane road with no bike path and little or no shoulder.

My company makes signs for this event every year - this year, they added a bunch of warnings about obeying traffic laws, probably at the behest of CHP and the sheriff's office. The one they ended up cancelling in order to not go over budget: a warning about trying to pass under unsafe conditions.

This is horribly sad. We were on Mt Diablo a couple of weekends ago and the common theme: none of those cyclists were following the rules of the road. They would cross double lines pass on blind curves etc.

I wish those that don't follow the rules of the road would realize the rules are implemented for their safety.
