Do you listen to a wide range of music with your kids? I've been wondering lately if I let my kids listen to inappropriate music. I dunno. I think because of the broad base it's okay to occasionally have some music on, say for example, that has swear words in it.
A snippet of music we listened to this weekend...
Four Seasons by Vivaldi (I like! and dance around the kitchen)
Misc. top 40 in the car (I tend to tolerate and even like a few songs. Radio usually is off, btw.)
Ill Communication by The Beastie Boys (I love it and sing&dance in my seat in the car)
The Vines (I like it)
I'm second guessing The Beastie Boys. Sabotage is a great song that daughter #1 sang the chorus with me. But Ill Communication. Hmm, that song has some questionable lyrics for an 11 yo. I guess. But top 40 has worse. Rationalizing? Perhaps. The words no longer go over her head everytime.
What do your kids listen to? How do you manage?

we listen to a lot of top 40. I know I don't censor Libby's music as well as I should, but I do talk to her about lyrics, and we talk about how various artists dress and what is good/bad about that... The one person we don't listen to is Eminem. But if I ever heard a song that she was listening to that was worrysome (anything overtly sexy or violent), I wouldn't let her listen to it.
We talk about what you read and hear invariably makes up the person you are or will become. She loves those love songs, just as I do, and I worry sometimes because she is only 11 and I feel that I should talk with her more about all this love stuff, but then today, I cannot say that love makes much sense to me, so I'd probably be the last person who should try to explain it. Sometimes I feel like I'm entirely too flawed and confused to be raising kids...

Kids listen to everything, from our 80's garbage to my classic rock to new stuff
Daughter # 1 decidedly Linkin Park, Pink Floyd, Incubus, Evanencence (sic)
Daughter # 2 more dancy music, some of the Linkin Parky stuff
Daughter # 3 Good Charlotte, Blink 182 et al
Lil' Bam Mom has him on a Funk Groove--he loves Car Wash
and Parliament Funk
Kids dance around the house and have portable CD players on in the car listening to 3-4 different songs at a time

Kid #2 listens to a mix of classic rock, hard rock and some metal.
He loves old Aerosmith, AC/DC, Skyynrd, Van Halen etc. He won't listen to rap at this point. He likes good guitar work.

I am one of those parents that really likes those parental advisory labels on cds. Please don't blast me for that opinion--it makes my job much easier to help decide what my son listens to without having to buy and listen to a million cds. Now I can check for lyrics online as well.
I let Colin listen to Good Charlotte, Linkin Park, POD and some others. I think he would really like the Dishwalla CD Coach introduced me to.
Together we listen to 80's and 90's--which he undoubtedly hates as his eyes roll into the back of his head--almost like an impending seizure of sorts.
We also listen to Cuban music and Santana and Los Lonely Boys. He also knows almost all the words to our Rat Pack CD.
One of my favorite CDs of all time is the Eminem "clean" cd. Even though it still has it's moments.

No kids, but i have a feeling i'm going to be rather selective when i get a brood of my own. I think as long as i can keep them away from "boom boom boom let's go back to my room", i'll be okay.

I prefer to sing to kidlets. Really loud, in my horrible horrible voice. My nieces and nephews really jam to bad 70s tunes. My 18MO niece liked the chorus of Kelis' "Milkshake" quite a bit, too.

You and Mr Aire are a match made in heaven! The otherwise quiet Mr, who doesn't even like singing in church--will sing loudly to Aire Jr. And Aire Jr's reaction is much like your avatar!!

Little Poky repeats everything, and her daycare is very strict on words
they are not supposed to say...stupid, booty, butt, shut up, etc so I have
to be very careful of what music she hears.
On that note one day I could not take Wiggles/Barney/Disney Princess songs anymore so I bought the Beatles 1 cd. The lyrics are
fairly innocuous and she loves it.

My oldest playing the piano is about 99% of the music in our house. I can listen to that for hours

We let them listen to whatever's on the radio.
coachette--likes rock, and poppy girl music (think Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne)
coach jr.- is a man after his Dad's heart...loves hard rock (asks for Godsmack and The White Stripes often) and also likes old 80's rock...currently asks to listen to Genesis Greatest Hits
Little Coach--likes any and all music...he dances to commericial jingles and theme songs to TV shows...all with a smile on his face.

My kids listen to whatever I listen to. I think I nearly went over the edge last year when I had the constant flow if kid tunes playing all of the time. I got to a point where I was going insane with all of it. So, I've switched back to listening to what I like most...Alternative Rock/Classic Rock. I will switch stations if the language or content of the song is not good. My kids seem to be ok with it and I'm much happier. They can bicker in the back of the van and I can listen to the tunes I like.
