So, I've met my first Riff-Raffer and if they're all that nice, we've got a really swell crowd here.
Got to the race a little early so I could meet up with thegman. Picked up my bib # and wandered around for a few minutes before he walked around the corner. Said our hellos and he grabbed a bib # too. He had a few other friends that were racing so I got to meet them too. A really nice group of folks.
The race ended up being pretty small, probably 50 or 60 people running. I lined up towards the front with one of thegman's friends and his son that were looking to run about the same pace as I was.
The gun went off and we were off. A group of people shot out in front of me while I tried to find a decent pace I could hold. I took most of last week off from tendonitis and haven't really done much hard training this week so I didn't want to blow up early. Once the group thinned out, there were 4 people in front of me. I picked off the 4th place guy at about the 5 minute mark (there were no mile markers ). After that, I could see the 1, 2 and 3 place guys in front of me and we were pretty evenly spaced with about 25 yds. between each of us.
First 6 minutes of the race were pretty much downhill and we paid for that with one not so steep but long hill that took a bite out of all of us. After that, the rest of the course was just short to moderate hills that weren't a problem. For most of the race I could see the 1, 2 and 3rd place guys but there was no chance of catching them unless they burned out and the 5th place guy was far enough behind me that he wasn't a threat unless I burned out.
Ramped up the final hill to the finish line and I knew that I wasn't going to set a PR, just not enough quality training recently. Ended up with a 20:13 (?) finish. They were busy setting up the finish line when I crossed it so I'm not exactly sure where it was.
The top 4 places were...
1 - some guy from the Atlanta Track Club. He actually ran too far because the course wasn't well marked and ended up with a 18:08 finish.
2 - Thegman's friend's son @ 19:45ish
3 - Thegman's friend @ 20:03ish
4 - Me @ 20:13
Now for the pictures...
Thegman and I post race.
Me with my 1st place AG trophy - The guy in the left of the picture is the Baptist minister that advocated drugs and cigarette smoking.
Me again. The two guys standing behind me on each side of the little girl were the 2nd and 3rd place finishers and the little girl that is between them is doing the Dannon Duathlon with me in June. She's just doing the shorter version.
Thegman after the race. My apologies for missing the finish line pic because I was busy fooling with the camera.
Gratituous shot of me because thegman was camera happy.
Good time at that race and the schwag bag had food in it I was starved after running.
Look for another upcoming race with thegman and I sometime in June. Hopefully we can draft one more GA Riff-Raffer to run with us this time.

Thegman's random notes on today's race (or: Ready, Set, Where did PH go?):
1. PH is remarkably fast.
2. Lilburn Baptist ministry advocates morphine use for expectant mothers, and smoking in labor/delivery waiting rooms;
3. Mile markers are important if trying to keep a steady pace;
4. Despite peculiar ministry, Baptists provide good schwag, including dental care products;
5. The only 3 people I knew in today's race finished in the top 4. I need to train harder or find a shortcut.
What a great time!
I accomplished both of my goals today: Finish below 26 minutes (25:50), and do it pain free.
Next stop is ramping up on miles w/o pain and getting back to 7:30 pace.
