Posted: 08/28/06 - 12:37 Post subject: Lighter than Air Duathlon Aug 26, 2006
Location: Lakehurst Naval Air Station NJ, the site of the Hindenburg crash.
Weather: the preceeding two days were hot and very muggy. Race day was cloudy, and 60ish at the start and just a little bit muggy. The base Chaplain asked the Big Guy for good running weather and we got it.
The race: There were 187 entrants. Oldest was a 79 year old lady.
Race started promptly at 0830. The first 3 miles were very flat, I think there was one VERY gradual slope in the whole loop. Interestingly, about 1.5 miles of the loop was on very smooth and well maintained dirt roads.
Transition to the bike and the 20 mile ride. This was two laps of a 10 mile course. Again, VERY flat except for a slight uphill portion at about mile 5. Roads were excellent even after a pretty rainy night. I noticed I started losing some ooomph about mile 12. I was averaging around 18 - 20mph on the first go around but changed to about 14 - 15mph on the second.
End of bike and transition to the two mile run. First mile was basically uphill. Had a conversation with one of the others about how our feet were basically asleep. I told him its called "bricking" and would last about 1/4 mile. Mine lasted about 1/2. This portion of the race went right by where the Hindenburg crashed. Turned the corner and went downhill to the finish. Cruised in at 2:09:59. I was 170 out of 187 overall, 6 out of 7 in my age group.
Generally I did better than the duathlon in April.
You can see all the info at:

Select bib # 5.
If you're looking for a first duathlon this is probably the one to go for.
After the race we went to a wedding reception for a friend's daughter on the boardwalk in Pt pleasant Beach NJ. Shorts and polo shirts, beer wine, shrimp, steak, lots and lots of food.
Funny thing was they had planned for about 100 guests but only about 50 of us showed up due to another family activity the night before. So my buddy invited the beach volleyball team over for dinner. Then we had a good time (yes there were female players - no they were wearing sweats)
PS Thanks for all the good wishes and vibes. They really helped.
