Posted: 03/12/03 - 10:02 Post subject: Let's have a meeting (groan)
In my new position I've learned a few things these last few weeks.
A. I can't seem to get anything done.
B. The things I want/need to get done become undone.
C. I seem to spend more time in meetings than my office.
Since my return on Monday I have been to:
4 meetings on Monday.
5 Meetings on Tue.
Have an all day meeting at 9 AM to discuss our new system rollout with members from Corporate.
Then two meetings on Thurs.
The odd part.
We have follow-up meetings to discuss what was said in the meeting.
I now know how Congress works.

And I thought my 1.5 hr. Monday morning meeting was a waste of time.

We just have 20 minute roll calls, that is it. Crime does not wait. Meeting are hard to schedule for us because if the people want it uninterupted they must do it on OT. So we try to do any meeting early in the morning but if duty calls, meeting is over.
I believe from what I have seen about the corporate world that most of these meetings are a real waste of time.

And a fashion show.
Men wear their best stiff starched white shirts (except me), women dress like trial lawers.
The coffee bad (I don't drink coffee).
No one believes in drinking water (cept me)
All the chit chat on little Buffy or how smart Timmy is.
The best I can do is ask "Going to a nude beach is a learning experience".
Then I get the looks.

Truer words were never spoken. I am a pro at avoiding unnecessary meetings. My philosophy is, if we can't discuss it in half an hour, then it's too big and needs to be further divided down. I do a LOT of my work via email and MVX because it's so much more efficient. But man, do some people like making a big deal out of nothing.....

But what about the snacks? They are feeding you, aren't they? If not, I'd definitely complain.

Meetings of more than 3 people are a waste. I find 2-3 people meetings very productive (when I call them, of course).
I bring my own water and usually Altoids to share. Makes me feel like I can fire-breathe... keeps me entertained.

I hear ya!!! When I was with John Deere they had meetings for everything. Nothing ever got done. That is why Green and Gold costs s much.
I think it was Mark Twain who said. "Meetings, where minutes are taken and hours are lost."

My two dogs, 1 cat, and son all gripe about the length of our daily meetings. I guess I need to be rethinking my corporate strategies, huh? Or, like Jrjo says, just offer them better snacks.

I thought John Deere cost so much because they spent so much money on brand recognition. (which they're very good at)

Well yes they are (at lunch at my desk instead of answering ?'s in the meeting), but I ask for the no-meat lunch and every looks at me like I'm some anti-beef sicko.
So far we tried to:
Make the corporate vendot look like a fool where his answers were not to our liking.
Wasted time on a sub-set moduel we may not purchase.
Complaing about the look of the GUI interface.
Ask about needing certain reports.
ETC<ETC<ETC.
