largest so far: Broad Street 2003 (9,064 finishers) and the nation's largest 15K, the Utica Boilermaker 2003 (8,829 finishers). Both will be trounced by this year's NYCM, 35,000 or so (maybe more as it's an anniversary year).
Smallest: Hibernian Hike 5K 2003 - 65 or so due to heavy rain.

Probably the duathlon I did this weekend, 700-800 people.
Smallest was probably 60-65 people.

Spirit of St. Louis. There was something like 8,000 there and I thought that was huge!! But looking at the #'s of other races I guess it was a fairly small get together.

Run, the Buckehad Sizzler in Atlanta, it is the fastest 10k course that can qualify you for the Peachtree 10k (october) 1200 i'd say
Skate, 800 the Athens to Atlanta 1998. that will be until May 2 this year, then it will be Disney with 2500

I don't like the mega-sized races. It is just too much of a zoo. I don't like dealing with a race expo, trying to get to the start, hour-long lines for the porta-potties, and then fighting through the crowds to get near the starting line. The best races are often a dozen guys on a track. Road races are usually best when they are 500 people or so. My last LA Marathon at 23,000 people was good only because I had an elite entry so I didn't have to deal with all the crowd problems. My family also got a big kick from seeing me on TV, something that obviously doesn't happen with small races. What I really look for is a well run race with good competition that doesn't have a bunch of logistical nightmares that often come with huge races.

I have a feeling the Crazy Legs race in Madtown this weekend is going to be crazy big. The largest one I've run is Sunburst in Southbend, IN. They did an excellent job, though, and had mile markers and the race was chip timed. It was really fun. The worst race I ever ran in terms of swarms of people was the Canterbury run here in Madison, WI. People were clustered around me, walking, not even trying to run. It was managed very poorly too. Bad experience, but good cause, so, oh, well.

With smaller races for me because I haven't been running for so very long, I feel like I'm out there all by myself...that it isn't even a race. I guess it can almost turn into a training run for me with that type of atmosphere. The worst one was where there were only 8 of us! Very small town and poorly advertised race.

Disney Marathon...I'm not sure if that would be fun or not, considering the popularity of it...at least the kids would be having fun.
