I saw that the LSU running club was starting up for this semester, so I figured I'd go check it out. The turnout was, uh, unimpressive. Three people, including myself.
The other two people weren't even going to LSU... they just got transferred from LSU med school in New Orleans because of the hurricanes. One of the guys was the president of the club when he was an undergrad, and we talked about trying to get it started again.
I guess a low turnout should be expected since it is fall break (though not really... today was a hurricane replacement day), but really... three people?

Come up to my area. We have three very active clubs within 30 miles of each other. Albany itself has one with various sub units (like a tri club).
Sounds like you have your job cut out for you. Good luck it will be worth it !!

Ran with the club again today. 8 people in all. The group ran not even a mile then turned around.
And most of the people that ran don't even live on campus, so they're driving to campus, fighting for a parking spot, walking a half mile to the meet point... all for 15 minutes of running?
This is pretty disappointing.

I disagree. They went to all that trouble to run? They want to run.. Or maybe,t hey want to connect. Have you all chatted before the run, or after the run, what anyone's goals are? Do you want to say, hey, it's 4-5 miles around campus, this is the route, meet back up here?
It sounds like someone needs to assume the leadership role, unfortuneatly.

The people that did show up were all in med school, and they are doing it to stand around and BS before and after, because this is apparently what they did in their undergrad years. That's great if it's to be a social thing, but I know I'm not the only person on campus that is somewhat serious about running. At least I'm hoping.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.
Start slooowly, be very low key, plan some things like 5K or 5 Mile runs on campus.
After a while some other "serious" runners will start to congregate.
It will take time.

I think also you are looking for some more serious runners than the average joe that showed up. Is there a track team there? Maybe you could ask about their runs, where they run, and see about that. What about a local running store? Does any stores offer the group run on Sat/Sunday mornings?
I would love to try running with a group. There's nothing around here. I've been meaning to cold-call some local runners that I have seen their names in some races and see if they would want to run, or maybe even just meet and talk about running and routes around here. But I haven't gotten to that step yet.

But with my work schedule, I've only been able to do that at most three times htis year.
