Posted: 05/12/06 - 09:39 Post subject: Kids & the internet... Libby posts at school
on quizilla.com while she is in her computer class. And, my darling, precious daughter, is very free with the F word in her posts. How is this not being detected at school? Seems like they should have filters. I just figured this out today, because Libby has a subscription (that she must've began at school, or else I would have seen it on her Mac) and something went to her email and I now have the password. So I am snooping, yes. She is still just 13 (well, 14 tomorrow, but still).
I have Libby's computer set up that she cannot access any website unless it is in her favorites. Well, I took fanfiction.net out of her favorites because last night while looking at the screenshots that a program saves for me, I saw that she is basically reading porn posted by other members. I knew she was no innocent kid, but good grief. I'm really upset. We're going to have a long talk tonite about her habits.
And now I have to call the school and find out WTF is going on. I guess I start with speaking to that teacher and go from there.
I freakin' hate the internet sometimes.

Have you been watching the NBC Dateline series on Catching Predators ? If I had a kid Libby's age I would definetly be freaking out.
By all means - start with the teacher and work your way up the food chain !!! I'm no prude but kids need guidance and control at that age.

What irks me the most is that they obviously don't have anything set up to filter words, which means that the kids must have access to all sorts of crap on the net.
If they cannot fix this, and immediately, I'm going to have to revoke her permission for internet access at school, and I'm also going to raise a fuss with whomever will listen.
Our school system (admin wise, anyway) is teh suck.

There is computer software that you can install on the computer that emails every keystroke to you.
You should look into it. It costs like $75 for it and is well worth it. They advertise it to catch online cheating, but it could be used for kids as well.
We won't get into why I know about it, but if I can find my disk, you can have mine. I don't need it anymore.

If you want them to REALLY Listen...
Get one of your lawyer friends to write the letter on your behalf. You'll be amazed at the response - especially if its sent via Registered (Not certified) mail with a return receipt.

Well, she doesn't have myspace or facebook. She tried, signed up in Charlotte for one of them, and I deleted the confirmation email and she never saw it.
I have the keylogger, it is part of Spector for the Mac. This program takes screen shots every 4 seconds, so I see everything she does. Everything she looks at, everything she types, etc. Problem with me is that I do not look at it often. Well, I didn't -- but now I will look at it every few days.
Oddly enough, I am working this summer for a lawyer (volunteering as part of our mentoring program at the school, and will be with him for the next year as I will do my internship with him as well) -- so I can take that tact should I need to.
Libby's days of subscribing to things are over though. She is this close to losing her email. And no, she does not have a free email -- again, this is not coming up on her Mac, and if I take away her privileges at the school, she will be cut off, completely.
I feel really bad for her, because she has no idea just what kind of biotch her mother can be. It will be crystal clear by 4:30 this afternoon though. Pray for the child.

NO COMPUTER FOR YOU is basically what i've done to her and it's only because i hate what it does to her; she becomes a zombie hitting that send button and it's all crap they're talking about -- gossip and ripping people to shreds online behind their backs..... she's allowed ten minutes of IMing in the morning if homework and piano are done, if not--the computer gets turned the eff OFF. how dare she sit in front of a computer and talk to friends, only I can do this!!!
i'm completely disgusted that that sh it is happening at a school brie. i would take it all away, sorry. good luck brie. i do not envy you in this situation but i believe it is staring me in the face as well.

but you must consider who you are talking to...a comupter numbskull ....brie's post scares the poo out of me cuz my eyes are just begging for the wool to be pulled down over on them and it's not going to take long for littlerock to realize this. plus, i feel like i want to trust both of my kids. i'd like to think that my endless spewing on the evils of internet whack jobs will register and they will at least be more aware of the onslaught of crud and weirdos that are just sitting there waiting... my daughter watched part of the dateline myspace story and i think it made her stop and think. but on the other hand, they all (12/13 yos) think they are just ENTITLED to slide around on the internet in any way, shape or form they desire.
so.....NO COMPUTER FOR HER!

I know where you're coming from. I had the wool pulled over my eyes for a long, long time.... then I found stuff I was not supposed to find.
Then I got spybuddy.
It's easy to use. Just install it and they do the rest.

Kids will be kids. Teenagers will be teenagers. That's probably never going to change. No matter how well you think you've done raising them, there's always the unknown factor.
Would you suggest or be satisfied if the school denied Internet access to all students? Yes, there should be something done to prevent students from going where they shouldn't. Absolutely! But kids/teenagers are smart...curious...clever. If they're motivated, they'll find a way.
Just don't shoot the messenger.
