Kim is almost 7, we are thinking of giving her an allowance each week, if she does certain chores: Clean her room, set table, help with dishes.

What's the going rate these days.

Mike wants to help with the dishes too, so we are thinking we should give him so money for his bank as well.

When little Poky is old enough for an allowance I am going to try
to keep chores and allowances separate.
I think chores should be done regardless. Chores are part of being
family. Whereas an allowance is way to learn about money i.e. how
to budget, how to save, smart spending, etc.

Thanks for jogging my memory Poky. I couldn't recall what the kids got for doing chores and now I remember why; we separated chores from allowance.

I think my kids got $5/week but I could be wrong.

When I was but a lad, all I got was a quarter. Sad

I was paying Nichole 5$ a week to sweep, and keep her room clean. When she's in trouble she does it for free. And she's been in lots of trouble lately. She's 7.

I'm with Poky and PH on this one; chores and allowance were separate. However, if my darling kidlets wanted to earn extra money, chores around the house that weren't their normal chores could be done for extra cash.

My oldest is 6 and we've been talking about an allowance for him too. I would agree that chores and allowance are separate issues. I'm of the opinion that everyone's got to pull their weight and have responsibilities without monetary motivation.

I read an article recently which suggested a sensible 50 cents per year of the child's age per week.

A QUARTER!! Shocked

I got a single nickel for every chore I did. Feeding, dishes, cleaning, etc. I guess that since I lived out in the country, I didn't need much money.

I wish I could blame it on growing up when a nickel was worth something, but I'm not that old (only 22).

Colin has been getting $6.00--two for now spending, two for tithing, and two for saving. That has really fallen through since we haven't had a church. Confused

One of Colin's friends told him that was abuse that he got so little--and this kid was SERIOUS!!

But, at the age of 12 we agreed on raising his allowance. So, up it goes this weekend!

Kim has learned about money in school and both kids have piggy banks (actually large plastic soda bottles). We were thinking half of said allowance in the bottle and half they could spend.

I think that's a nifty idea. It also helps if they learn about saving towards something.

Cut out the picture from a catalog and glue it to the jar. It helps keep them focused about all that money in the jar.

NO weekly allowance here. And no money for doing what is expected of them--daily chores. But when they volunteer to help with work or done something nice that was not expected, then they are rewarded well!

33% of his income goes back into tithing? How's about cutting it back to 60 cents/week?
