She didn't want it because, it could possibly be 8 years (2 possible consecutive terms of Kerry at the helm) before she could take a run at the Big Seat @ the White House.
I agree with your best case scenario. Don't be suprised if some skeltons start appearing in the media about Kerry and/or Edwards as we approach the Nov. elections.

First of all, the media don't spend time endorsing anything unless it's right in front of them. I just don't understand why anyone sees media as liberal entities. If anything, US media are right of center.
Secondly, do you seriously believe the Clintons are a threat? I don't think anyone likes her enough to warrant space on the front page of anything. We come at this from different places but I really don't think you have anything to worry about, with either of them.

I was just having this conversation with someone else. That person thought of Cokie Roberts as a liberal. I see her as, at best, a centrist, although a Democrat. I think these sorts of categories are ultimately a waste of time because we don't even agree on what they mean.

She clearly leans left in her reporting. She grew up in a Democratic family (father was Majority Leader and mother was congresswoman).
Funny joke about her:
News Anchor Dan Rather, Reporter Cokie Roberts, and a U.S. Marine were captured by an al Quaeda death squad. They were tied up and brought before the leader.
The leader said, "I am familiar with your western custom of granting the condemned a last wish. Before we kill and desecrate you, do you have any last requests?"
Dan Rather said, "Well, I'm a Texan, so I'd like one last bowlful of hot, spicy chili. There's some in my bag." The leader nodded to an underling, who returned with the chili and untied one hand. Rather ate it all and said, "Now I can die content."
Cokie Roberts said, "I'm a reporter to the end. I want my tape recorder so I can describe the scene here and what's about to happen. Maybe someday someone will hear it and know that I was on the job till the end." The leader directed an aide to put the tape recorder in front of her, and Roberts dictated some comments. She then said, "Now I can die happy."
The leader turned and said, "And now, Mr. U.S. Marine, what is your final wish?" "Kick me in the butt," said the Marine. "What?" asked the leader. "Will you mock us in your last hour?" As the Marine was untying the others, they asked him, "Why didn't you just shoot them? Why did you ask them to kick you in the butt?"
"What!?" said the Marine, -- "And have you liberal a-holes report that I was the aggressor??"
