I know parents from non-English countries frequently like their children to learn or still speak the language of their home country as well as English. That's reasonable enough, no?

My daughter hung out with a girlfriend this weekend whose parents insisted that she speak with her original British accent around them even though she's lived in the US for 5 years and sounds like a reg-u-lar American now.

I'm not saying that's wrong, just a little different.

My sister moved to Georgia a few years ago, and started speaking with a southern accent. Now that she is in Florida, she has still has a little bit of the Philly and Southern accent in her.

My MIL is Danish, but she moved to North Carolina about 50 years ago. She now lives in South Carolina and has a Danish/southern accent. It's bizarre, but cool.

I got rid of my pittsburgh/WPA accent 20 years ago. I sound so much smarter now.

In my first job outa college I worked in a customer service call center. Tre' boring despite the literally constant incoming phone calls. The woman behind me used to pretend to be from Jamaica and talk with that accent. She was fabulous entertainment... the supervisors didn't mind because she could conduct the whole call that way.

I can understand wanting them to speak with proper grammar but the accent biz seems pretentious.

I've lived in the Chicago area for 25 years come next month. And people can still tell I speak with a Northeastern Wisconsin accent.

I lost my NY accent after a few years in MN. I couldn't imagine telling my child to fake an accent though just to make me feel better.

I'm always amazed when people who have lived in N. America for so many years and continue to maintain their accents like they never left their native country and other people can come over and lose the accent in months if they want.

I guess it depends on your inclination.
