Right now, no. Georgia's constitutional ban, for example, specifically bans civil unions as well as marriage for gays. But there is no rhetoric occuring between the supporters and non-supporters of the term "marriage" and its meaning. Polls have shown consistently that when the term "marriage" is removed from same sex relationships people are much more accepting of gay civil unions. It's an area that can be explored. I can accept people may have a problem with the semantics. If by changing the semantics a little, they still support discrimination, then you start showing them publically for what they are. Many conservatives do not wish to be seen as exclusive of other groups. Barry Goldwater conservatives, for example, don't have a problem with gay unions, whereas Ronald Reagan conservatives aligned with religious groups seek to put their religious beliefs into national, state and local laws.
