I went to an 'abs' class at the YMCA last night. A much smaller class than I had imagined it would be. It was me, my daughter and 5 or 6 other people.
Normally, I'm one of those people that's really quiet in a class because I'm busy listening to the speaker, but not this time. I know a little about muscle development and nutrition so I was able to answer quite a few of the questions that the instructor asked.

I realized that I may know 0.1% of what I'd like to know about human physiology and that the instructor knew TONS more than I do.

The class ended up running over by 45 minutes because I kept asking questions and helped trying to clarify some things for the other people that were there.

I ended up coming away from the class with two things ::
  1. I've got a lot to learn still about nutrition and physiology.
  2. I asked specifically about why I have so much trouble getting my bottom two abs to show up. The instructor told me that if I've trained this long that I probably can't. A professional in the field told me I can't do something. That means I have to bust my tail to prove that I can!

Wow, good for you John, at least you had somewhat of an idea about basic fitness and nutition too, not just expecting to enter the class wtih a spare tire and come out with a washboard.

Believe me, I'm no expert in this area; however, I thought (i.e. read somewhere) that apparent ab development relies on eliminating fat in the region. Now, I know nothing about your build, but I've gathered that you're the athletic sort (to say the least). Is it possible that your body is holding on to a just a wee bit of flab right there? Please don't take this the wrong way don't ban me don't ban me don't ban me...just wondering if this might be the case.

That's exactly the case. I've got the littlest bit of fat that hangs on for dear life. That and I really need to focus more on hitting the lower abs. I can do it, I just need to work a little harder at it.

PH, Would love to hear more. Did they pull out stability balls or was it alot of crunches kinda stuff or was this a lecture class? Isn't it true that a man's midrift is the primary place to store fat, so aren't many of us just cursed unless we go for minimal bodyfat?
I bet it is an interesting class!

No real hands-on stuff or examples. There was a skeleton there and she showed where the muscles attach to the bones.

There wasn't much discussion on asthetics, it was mostly about core strength training for those with back problems. I went for reasons of vanity, but I did learn a lot.

The instructor preached on doing high reps and train abs every day which I don't do. I'm much more of the belief that you should train them just like every other muscle group.

Actually everything I have read about abs says they need more training than you do the other muscles as well, and that they are almost the only muscle group that it is safe to train every day (unlike lifting, where you shouldn't) I'm not sure if it is a density issue or what...Mindy???

For the most part, I'm getting the results I'm after doing what I'm doing so I'm going to stick with it. What I really need to do is drop that last little bit of fat in the mid-section and I'll be happy (with my abs).

jrjo: Yep, a primary area of fat deposition in men is the waist area. (Or as Rando likes to type it: waste.) In women, the major areas of fat deposition are the upper thighs, hips and the triceps (go figure?)

genie/PH: Yep, the best way to work the ab muscles is to work them every day with high reps and little to no weight.

Why? Because you're not trying to increase the size or bulk of the musculature, like you do with other muscle groups.

PH, I bet you a buck that if you did abs every day, just like that instructor instructed, you'd see the difference you want to see, and sooner than what you've been seeing.
