Posted: 06/22/02 - 08:04 Post subject: Just got a bike
Joe gave me an extra bike that he had laying around his house, its virtually brand new, less than 400 miles. I want to incorporate some
cycling into my routine, maybe once or twice a week. Any thoughts?
I was thinking of maybe riding on Monday's in place of a run, just not sure how long/far to go etc.

Road or Mountan bike? I'd try to work my way up to riding for 1 hr./2 days a week. I wouldn't go for distance because unlike running hills make a huge difference in your overall speed.
Best of luck riding.

It has a mountain bike frame, with the flat handle bars, (not the ten speed type) but road tires, pretty light. That was what I was thinking of doing working up to an hour or so 2x a week, hopefully I can fit at least the 2nd one in. I run M-F, not on weekends, b/c of SO's work schedule. May even start riding to work on my half day Friday's, its only 9 miles.
Thanks John.

Riding to work is an excellent way to get in the miles and 9 miles isn't such a great distance that you'll be worn out when you get there.
My commute is 31 miles round trip if I ride home and back. Most of the time I'll drive in, ride home then ride to work the next day and drive home. If I do the full round-trip, I'm usually too tired to fit in my running, swimming or cycling.

Oh yeah I have a helmet, had one from a few years ago just tried it on at it still fits good, it is made by Bell, pretty good one. We got helmets for the kids when we got them bikes.

Took it for a 10.2 mile spin yesterday, 37.29. I really enjoyed the ride, gonna make it part of the routine.

bikes rule! congrats on the free one Cappy!
Here's what I like to do. In town we have a pretty nice flat trail that stretches for, I believe 45 miles. Anyway, I ride the bike for a good 15-20....take a break, eat a snack and lock up my bike. Then I take a jog for a couple miles.
Talk about being exhausted at the end of the day...

Way to go Cap'n on the bike! I got my bike at the beginning of this year, partially to rehabilitate my knee and partially just because it seemed very fun and I have loved it. I have the same Trek PH has and I have loved mine.
Unfortunately, I don't have any great advice as to how to fit more bike time in, except that if you can commute with it, do it!
Have fun!!

you'll enjoy the refreshing ride and break from running. The bike works different muscles and you'll notice that in your daily runs after a period of time. My weakness in running is hills and cycling improves that. Enjoy it.[/code]
