My mom sort of teased me yesterday by saying that I'm "antisocial" and "a nerd" b/c I run and have not much interest in team sports like my younger brother. Fortunately my dad came to the rescue b/c he was a runner himself when he was much younger. Some of my unfit friends also think I'm crazy b/c I run. Have any of you ever got teased, made fun of, or jeered at just because you are a runner?

I'm married - that should answer your question. Razz

Really, though, I have never had anything from people but encouragement and positive things to say. In a lot of cases, the initial reaction's surprise ("You? When did this start?") or disbelief ("OMG, you look so much better" - btw, I was told never to correct anyone when they're right - Mr. Green ). But they are impressed and have something encouraging to say.

Nice as that is, though, I find it more encouraging when I get compliments from fellow runners. Sharing the same experience and knowing about putting in the time, I guess.

Not to my face, but I suspect there are some comments made behind my back. I didn't start running until I was 38. Its my life, I live it as I choose, and truly do not care what others think. I know my family thinks it is very cool, so for me its case closed.

most of the time I get some ribbing followed by disbelief, or disbelief followed by some gentle ribbing. either way, I try to work in a sufficiently impressive number of miles that I've run. of course, while I'm saying this I know that my numbers are pretty low compared to many of you, but non-runners are impressed because they know they couldn't run a quarter mile without dropping. last week, an acquaintance asked me about my running because they overheard a conversation I had with another runner. I was hesitant to say too much, but they pressed me and I finally had to admit that I had nearly gotten some hardware in a recent race. they were very encouraging, and I find most people are after they get over the shock of your mileage and the teasing they like to do.

not really teased... more of a look of suprise form most people. my milage is pretty low too, but i try to do something, which in my opinion is a lot better than sitting around all the time. one time i was talking to one of my friends, telling him about my runnning. he was actually really impressed at me. (either that, or he was really good at faking it)

i think the only person who 'teases' me is my bf. and its really more about hanging out here than the physical activity.

A couple weeks ago I was out to dinner with some co-workers. They wanted to go play some pool, but I still needed to get in a run. Anyways, they thought I was absolutely nuts for going home, lacing up my sneaks', and getting a few miles in instead of hanging out. Actually, I think they were even mildly offended. I am training for 26.2 miles on 10/5, so I can't just skip workouts. People who aren't into running sometimes don't understand when you can't postpone a workout, huh?

I especially like getting teased by the gaggle of smokers standing outside my office when I run at mid-day. They all look at me and shake their heads.

This week, one of them actually said, "Be careful not to overdo it. The air quality really stinks today." It wouldn't happen to be because of all the SMOKE out here, would it???

I'm polite to them, at least. I always invite them to run with me. Mr. Green

Nope. I think most people just don't understand how I run and keep the milege that I do. I know that they see the benefits of it and that I stay in shape. So, I've never been teased for it. I have been running half my life now and it's something I will continue to do for years to come. Team sports...been there, done that. I no longer play on teams. So, there's nothing nerdy about it!

Keep running! Very Happy

You're definitely not anti-social. Look at all the other cool runners you know right here! Wink

Another thing...running gives you a nice outlet to have some time to yourself and get time to think. That's a great benefit too, for we all need to have time to reflect or to be by ourselves.

my friends did religiously. in love of course, as my training deterred me from alcohol and other high school shenanigans. my one friend used to say "you better not have track on my wedding day".

as for an antisocial runner? phsaw. hey, we both know what the riffraff are like.

smokers, fat people, and other general a$$clowns will make fun of you. then again, they're fat smoking a$$clowns. Mr. Green it'll be even better when they try to diet, or quit smoking. y'know, because THATS funny.

worry about what makes you feel good. not what they think.

teased by the guys I work with about my placement in some of the local races. Never realizing that our team has always garnered hardware with me on it.
