Posted: 06/05/03 - 17:36 Post subject: Job interviews...
I'm trying to find someone to do some clerical/legal assistant type work for me, and I had two people in for interviews today. From their resumes and my brief conversation with each on the phone, both appeared qualified.
One was dressed in a business suit and interviewed well. Pleasant, intelligent, and likely would do a good job.
The other wore a tank top, jeans and had a pierced tongue and eyebrow. I was taken aback at her choice of clothes for the interview, and I figured at first sight that the interview would self destruct at some point.
It didn't. She interviewed better than the first.
I'm considering giving the second one the job, but I have to figure a way to discuss the outfit/piercing thing, since it doesn't mesh with the work we do and the clients I have.
Should I even bother, or should I just hire the first one?

Appearance says a lot. I believe the first one should be picked. Showing up at an interview like that is a disgrace and disrespectful to you.

At least you know the second one is openly wild... the first one is probably some closeted freak just waiting for the chance to bury a letter opener in you back.......
Not sure if you weren't on some hidden camera show..why would someone come to an interview like that....maybe you should have stated "LAW OFFICE" in the ad rather than Atlanta's Hottest Office at which to work.........
Whata ya have? Whata ya have?

Thats kind of what I was taught but I hate to go strictly on appearances when someone is already proving to break the stereotypes.
G, is there anyway you can call her back and ask her how she feels about professional dress and hiding the piercings during work hours? If its not an option for her, go with the first candidate.

I second dat! You'll get used to looks, but you won't get used to average work...not saying #1 was bad or anything buy you clearly expressed that #2 was better, theg...
Now if only you could post some pictures...

In what way did she interview better? More poised? More knowledgeable about the tasks that she would need to perform? You could have mentioned acceptabel dress during the first interview but frankly, I would have been a little shocked and dumbfounded. If you think she would do a better job than the suited one, give her a second interview and explain the style of your office and how it is important to make clients comfortable (including their perceptions of your company).

Though some of you are trying the PC line here. I strongly disagree. There are rules and expectations posed on people to go to job interview. That person may have interviewed well but they obviously do not care about personal appearance. 1st impressions say a lot. If they do not care about appearance what about turning in work that is let say well written but on a sloppy piece of paper or something. Little things mean a lot.
I would not even let her in the door. If she looked like that. I credit G with at least granting the interview.
When I interviewed for RTPD, I was the only one interviewed for the job. I knew I was getting the job and the interview was formality. I still went like I had something to prove. I believe it is important that if you think you are the best you need to present all the best.
Disagree if you wish but I stand by my original statement. Thank you

I am inclined to agree with Joe on this.
But a tank top and pierced tongue? That is really ballsy...

Maybe that tank top was a singlet and she's a runner.

a classic optimist
how could you have taken her seriously ....
tank top?? like where did she think she was going? big kahuna water park? totally.
if you're really convinced she was better, give her a second shot but i'd bring that dress code issue up before she sits her pierced a$$ down. who knows? she may even get wilder for the second interview. (tube top and thong anyone)

At the start of the interview, I called my legal assistant to tell her I was interviewing and she actually said, "If I didn't know better, I'd think you were on Candid Camera with that one."

Her experience was more in line with the type of work she'd be doing. I also got a better feeling about a genuine interest in the work, rather than "just having a job."
I was certainly surprised by her outfit, but I'll give anyone a shot if they can prove themselves. And if they can conform to dress code.
I've decided to call both of them back in the a.m. and try to get some more information. I'll deal with dress code specifically with number 2, even though it came up today and she said she had no problem with it.
Maybe one of them will insult my family and make it easy...

Though I am inclined to agree with Joe, there are many people out there who have never really been taught (or bothered to learn - not trying to place blame here) proper interviewing skills. I'd be inclined to give the second one a chance once I had clearly detailed the dress code and she'd agreed to it.
Plus, after work happy hour could be interesting to say the least! I love 'interesting peoples' like that!

Yeah, those people that grew up either under a rock or in complete solitude. Give me a break. Joe is 100% right. You show up in formal attire, regardless of the position or company, to show respect. I remember getting dressed up for an interview at Dunkin' freakin' Donuts in college.
This woman has been working in the law profession for some time, too. That would make it a double insult when interviewing her, because she clearly knows what the dress code is. I get to wear super casual dress to work, but would never even THINK to wear a tank top as that's inappropriate for the workplace.
My advice? Don't hire either and start afresh.
