Posted: 08/03/03 - 20:55 Post subject: Jacksonville Fl: Tour De Pain 2003 Summary!
In case you don't know the Tour De Pain is a 3 race series that starts at 7:30 on a Friday Night with a 4 mile beach run, then has a 1 mile sprint at 7:30 on Saturday Morning and has a 5K for the finale at 7:30 on Saturday night.
Below is a summary of how I did.
4 Mile Beach Run (Friday Night 7:30 PM)
Another Very Humid Run but I set a PR!!! I missed the first mile marker but here are the two splits that I got.
Race Number: 1125
Overall Place: 111
35 - 39 Age Group: 15
Splits
2 Mile: 14:41
4 Mile: 15:48
Total: 30:29
I really wish I could learn to go out a little slower so I could start running negative splits for my races. I hate getting passed by so many people in the last 1/3 to 1/4 of the race.
Mile Sizzler Results (Saturday Morning 7:30 am)
Race Number: 1125
Overall Place: 105
35 - 39 Age Group: 16
Splits:
Split 1: 1.22
Split 2: 1.37
Split 3: 1.33
Split 4: 1.33
Total: 6:02 (Watch time was 6:04 so that is why the splits don't add up)
All during the race I was passing people so I thought I had broken the 6 minute barrier pretty easily until I turned the final corner and saw that I was going to just miss. I guess everyone else around me was slowing down even more than me. That was really weird!!!
5K Finale (Saturday Night 7:30 pm)
Race Number: 1125
Overall Place: 143
35 - 39 Age Group: 18
Splits:
Mile 1: 7.00
Mile 2: 7.33
Mile 3: 7.39
Finish: .41
Total: 22.50 (Watch time was 22:55 so that is why the splits don't add up)
Well I guess I finally slammed into the wall by the third race. My legs were kind of sore leading up to the race and then by mile 1 I knew I was in trouble. My back felt tired and sore and I just didn't feel it in my legs. All I could do was hang on and finish the race. Needless to say I am really disappointed in this race. I had had 2 great races leading up to it and now I run this. My overall results were:
Overall Place: 101
35 - 39 Age Group: 15
4 Mile Beach: 30:29
1 Mile Sprint: 6:04
5K finale: 22:34
Total: 59:33
Here are the complete results if you are interested.

I hit my goal of breaking 60 minutes for the series but I was really hoping to break 59. Well all I can do now is move on to my next race which is in about 2 weeks. Until then take care!

Ride the wave of that Pr for as long as you can! Congrats. You know without all the bodies on the track, I'm thinkin' that sub-6 woulda been in the bag.

Just so you know the mile was done on the streets. It was a just a long 1 mile loop. So that made it tough to gauge where you were at.
Thanks Everyone.

Here is some more narrative for everyone on how the races went.
I did break 60 for the entire series: 59:33. This year definitely felt tougher than the previous 2 years. I ended up taking a total of 1 minute 57 seconds off of my overall PR from last year.
For the 4 mile Beach Race: 30:29 I felt ready for the beach this year. I started off quick like I usually do. I never saw the first mile marker but John thinks I went through it about 7 flat. As usual I thought I was going slower than that and the next thing I know I am kicking a$$ on the first half of the race. I guess I hate getting passed by so many people at the beginning of the race. Then it was time to struggle back. I hit the turn in 14:41 and I felt pretty good. I was hoping to hit the split at about 15:30 but oh well. I saw the 3 mile marker and I guess I was around 22:35 so I knew I was slowing down. My return split was 15:48 and I ended up crushing my 4 mile beach PR by over 2 minutes.
1 mile Sprint: 6:02 This was the one race I thought I would really do well at and I don't know what happened. My first split was 1:21. A little quick but still okay. (I was looking to run a 1:25) Then I made a concerted effort to keep/pick up my pace. I was passing people and when I hit the second quarter I my split was 1:37. I thought maybe they had it measured a little long. So I kept on running feeling good. Still passing people. For Quarter 3, I ended up at 1:33. I didn't see my split until after the race since I was concentrating on hanging with a group of guys who seemed to be moving at a pace that I wanted. We were still passing people. Finally I turned the corner into the finish line and realized that I was going to come up short . I ended up with a 1:33 for my final split. So even though I was passing a lot of people I guess they were dropping off even faster than I was.
5K: My worst 5K in AGES. 22.50 I got there and my legs felt tired and sore. I knew this one was going to hurt as soon as I tried to do a little warm-up run along the final turns to Hogan street. So finally the race starts I and I start off at a pace that I thought was fairly conservative. I ended up at 7:00 and I knew I was in trouble. My legs were tired and it felt like someone was poking me in my back right under my ribs. I struggled to the half-way point and realized that I was dead meat for the last half. By the 2 mile split which I did in 7:33 I was just fighting to finish in a respectable time. I watched at least 2 Clydesdales pass me and pull away from me. As I got back to the street that we start on (I don't remember the name) I was passed by 2 sets of women. As I made the final turns around the block I was able to pull closer to them. I hit mile 3 in 7:39. Luckily I was able to pass all 4 women in the final .1 which I did in 41 seconds.
I guess the humidity got to me. My usual goal is to beat my previous years times and I did that for the first 2 races but I missed my 5K time from last year by 10 seconds. I guess I have something to really shoot for next year. I do feel good heading into the Carrabba's 5 Mile run though.
