how many kids come to school with notes about how they can't participate in PE, when it's the day to run the mile for the President's Fitness challenge.
# of notes so far all year, all classes combined: 2
today(mile run day, in 4 grades only): 5
We have some kids who are in good shape, and I'm pretty impressed with them. And then we have a ton who are in terrible shape, not many kids in the middle.

As the school nurse, my wife sees both ends of the spectrum. Its not just your school.

Since I was never able run the mile (I never once had an excuse note) I made sure that my son would know how.
He was not going to suffer my same shame.
