I just had a 6 hour class in full body harnesses, hoists, hazardous vapors, gas detectors - use and operation, confined space rescue....etc...

I have to sign off before anyone enters a permit required confined space...

I always enjoy the entrapment procedure drill.

1 Activate PAD. (personal alarm device)
2 Make yourself as comfortable. Lay down if at all possible.
3 Conserve oxygen. Await rescue.

Wait for rescue team to arrive
Wait for resuce team to put on SCBA gear
Wait for rescue team to assemble hoist
Wait for confined space officer to authorize entry and sign off 10 page checklist.
Wait for rescue team to decide who goes in first...draw straws..
Wait for rescue team to figure out how to get you on backboard
Wait for rescue team to figure out how to get you and the backboard thru the tiny access hatch.
Get dropped a couple of times
Wait for rescue team to stop laughing.
Wait for volunteer ambulance to arrive
Wait for volunteer ambulance to arrive
Wait for volunteer ambulance to arrive
Ride to hospital in supervisors pickup

Keep it calibrated - they go out of calibration and become pretty useless in a hurry.

Confined space = any area where the potential to be overcome by a harmful gas. We have a ton of them where I work, especially since argon is used throughout our plant in welding. You can suffocate in a pit/tunnel etc. that has argon in it. There are numerous venting and air circulation systems thruout our place to help keep this from happening. Each confined space has to be tested, monitored, permits given out prior to entry, etc. and safety gear has to be available in the event of an emergency.
