Since we've already spoiled it....

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Alan Webb, who was supposed to end America's streak of mediocrity in middle-distance races, got outmaneuvered and outrun as he failed to make it out of the preliminary round in the 1,500 meters.

Hoping to become the first American in 36 years to win an Olympic medal in the 1,500, Webb finished ninth in his heat Friday, failing to reach Sunday's semifinals. Twenty-four runners advanced, and Webb had the 25th-fastest time.

He missed qualifying by .11 seconds.

Webb, 21, running in the slowest of the three heats, finished in 3 minutes, 41.25 seconds. He was stuck in the middle of the field for most of the race, and faded on the final stretch.

Webb kept trying to break out of the pack by looping outside, but could not make any progress. He continually got jostled when he tried to break through the pack.

I'm sure his forehead is bruised purple now from banging it on the wall. At the trials he talked about his race style being to run from the front. I gotta wonder what ever got in his head to stick in the middle of the pack. Arrggggh.

Crap, that really sucks. I was SO hoping to see him pull it off too, he's such a down to earth kid, not like some of our other track "stars" with big huge egos and bad attitudes. He'd make us look classy again. Sad

I have liked Alan for a long time. I mean, he is my hometown boy and all. But, I've heard stories about his arrogance lately that are really starting to annoy me. He had that "don't you know who I am" attitude. Well, I guess when you start getting too big for your own good then things like this happen.

(I'm very sad he didn't at least make it to the finals). Sad
