that this takes up a lot more time than "hobbies" and stuff like that? And in terms of importance, there's never been anything like it in my life, as far as extra stuff goes... I mean, it's always, if I do that, when will I be able to get my run in? We're going here for the weekend; where & when will I run? This weekend is packed, but this time here is slotted for running, so work around it.

My brother Scott, also a runner, is coming up from WV for the weekend. He is tired of this hilly area... he says he's going to have to travel the 25 minutes to Dad's house every morning if I can't get him a guest pass to Bally's.

We're serious about our sh!t, us runners.

I agree that it can take more time than other hobbies but I have seen much better results since this is something that is a lot less expensive than other hobbies, ie golf. I will admit that I think about running on vacations if at all possible but due to the little ones I dont get to run on weekends so I don't feel to guilty on weekend road trips.

If I stay with family when I go out of town, they know that I'm going to get up and go running every morning. It's a pretty in expensive hobby compared to a lot of them.

Its a pretty inexpensive if you accumulate stuff gradually. I am actually at a point that I really don't any more apparel. I have so much that I rotate it pretty well. Only thing I buy regularly now is sneax

I'm like PH, the family knows I'll be running first thing in the a.m. when we're outta town. I'll gladly sacrifice a hour's sleep to get up before anyone else and tiptoe out the door for a quick jaunt. Often I'll internet surf the area around the hotel or where ever we're staying and route out hour long runs even before we leave. If I can pick a hotel near something cool that I'd never see without the time to run all around before crowds start, I get a dose of vacation few do.

Travelling 25 miles is kinda extreme though. What's up with wimpin' out of the hills?

Dollar-wise... race fees, shoes, 'actual' raceday transportation, clothing, memberships, subscriptions, etc, I'm well under $1000 a year, probably closer to $750. So at a couple bucks a day, it's still cheaper than drinkin', smoking, golfing, gambling, hunting, or the other 29 habits most wives complain their husbands have ...I'm the first to remind the mrs on that one Mr. Green

Scotty is a no-frills distance runner, jrjo. He scoffs at hillwork and turns his nose up at drills of any kind. He just wants to get out on a long flat road and run his 6-8 miles per day and call it quits.

I keep telling him to spice up his run-life; you know, take his running out, show it a good time. He looks at me disdainfully and says the key to a long and happy relationship with his running is going the long haul and not looking somewhere else for a little fun.

dunno

Although, I don't consider it a 'hobby'. I consider myself a runner and running is a part of my life. It's not just something I do, it's something I am.

i was watching a travel channel ditty on Savanah GA and they did this shot of one of those long, long, long, flat, wide roads lined with those huge huge trees on both sides of the road that made it almost tunnel-like. it was gorgeous.

all i could think of was I WANNA RUN THERE. NOW.

I'm definitely thinking about that one for 2004, instead of Myrtle Beach. Althoughhhhhh.....a half around that time frame might be doable.....hmmm.....is it real pricey down there like Kiawah, PH?

Guy I ran some of MB last year with had just run Tybee two weeks prior, said it is a really nice marathon.

This is another reason why running is such a great sport, it's so versatile. I have a friend who ran a marathon when he totally wasn't prepared (he wasn't even up to 1/2 marathon distance when he ran it), and as frustrated and hurt as he was after that debacle he didn't give up on the sport. Instead, he runs about 3 miles several times a week and is very content. He's physically fit and is healthier person because of it.

I always run on vacation and got into trouble over Christmas, so that was a bit of a wake-up call that one does have to be considerate about family. Still, on vacations, even my hubby will ask me if there's a race maybe I'd like to run. He's great about all of this, usually.

First thing I packed when we went to Disney was my running stuff. When we got to our Hotel, my running stuff was the first out of the suitcase. As we drove into town, I clocked a few reference points to calculate distances.
