have worked out a route that i think i can manage.
Is there a way to tell how many miles it is with no road signs saying "1 mile" ect?

most bikes have an odometer that's more accurate than a car's. Plus you don't have to follow the streets exactly.

The gmap Pedometer is really good - several of us here use it.

Where we live are several commuter train routes. Several of these have running trails along them, pretty much parallel. We use the mile markers for the trains (they mark every quarter-mile, and fractions to one-hundredth-mile at automated crossings). If there are lines where you live, you may want to consider that.

So this gmap thing is pretty accurate then, huh?

I live right next to a long road (nice sidewalk too). Apparently it's a mile in length. I walk along it every day to college, i swear you wouldn't think it's a mile.

Yes it is very accurate. I have compared it to my Garmin GPS and it's right on.

I'm less scientific, I run with my Ipod and know how long it takes me to run a mile if I'm really trying and if I'm just kind of jogging, so usually go by the songs length. (probably not as accurate as what these guys are mentioning!) I've also driven routes and then run them. Smile

I can usually tell by how long I've been running and the effort I'm putting out. My fiance asked me the other day how I knew how many miles I went and I tried to explain this to him. He didn't get it until we got in the truck and drove the route. He was mighty impressed!!! Mr. Green

On one of the roads that I run on I measured the distance between telephone poles and every other pole equaled a tenth of a mile. I don't know if all poles have a specific distance between them but these were pretty close to 20 poles equaled one mile.

Height regulations and type of wire suspended probably vary across the country, thus the spacing would not be consistant. Maybe plus or minus 20%?
