Time for a precedent. Arrest and prosecution. There are too many inhuman practices in the name of "sport'. Whether it's brawling in hockey or starving jockies in horse racing, it floors me what kind of skeletons people are afraid to confront. It's the 21st century for cryin' out loud.

If the NHL feels it's time to clean up their image, what happens next could be the defining moment.
Suspension for the rest of the season, including playoffs? Nah, not gonna stop it from happening again. I just saw Todd Bertuzzi's reaction (from 2000) to Marty McSorley's assault on Donald Brashear. Bertuzzi said, "Something's got to be done." Apparently, everything that happened to McSorley didn't deter him from doing what he did. Suspension was not a deterrent.
This is the perfect time for the NHL to send a message. "Suspension" hasn't stopped it. It's time for something really serious. "Banned for life" might do it. "Son, you can play hockey for a living anywhere else, just not in the NHL." Yeah, that might have an impact.
If Todd Bertuzzi is banned from playing in the NHL, will that stop it?

Hold on. I think you're stereotyping hockey players as both stupid and criminally violent.
The sad thing is, you're probably right. The first time that the NHL bans a player will get the players' attention. But I'm afraid that it won't hold it. It'll take another player being banned to hammer home the "We won't tolerate this behavior" message.
I almost expect to hear someone claim that the threat of banishment will affect the game in a negative way. Players will be afraid of too much contact, blah, blah, blah. Since when did hitting someone in the head with a stick or sucker punching someone have anything to do with sport?
But since Bertuzzi is already remorseful....

But what if Bertuzzi was ordered by coaching staff to 'get out there and hit that guy hard?' Don't the teams have some liability for hiring enforcer type players?

Ordered? "Hey, Bertuzzi! You're in. Get out there and break someone's neck. Be quick about it!"
Following orders? You think you'd be fired for disobeying? Nah, that dog don't hunt.
Sure, all hockey teams have those kinds of players but there certainly is a limit to what they should do to "enforce" anything. Fortunately, this specific action was rare.
He needs to sent to the penalty box for about, oh, 15 years. Probably be too old to play then, eh?
