If you'll be around, NBC is showing a one hour special on the Ironman Championship in Hawaii at 4:30pm EST today.
Last week, NBC also showed coverage of the NYC marathon. It's nice to see endurance sports getting this kind of coverage.

Pretty good show.
Granted I have spent the last 20 minutes answering the question, Is that a boy or a girl, Is that a boy or a girl, Why is she missing a leg. Where is her leg? Why is that guy in a wheelchair?
Wow, this has been 30 solid minutes of questions and boy is it hard to explain an Iron Man triathalon to a 6 year old.
Someone pass me a beer!

That was great, I watched the entire thing. If that don't motivate my ass, nothing will.

I just came home, and luckily, that was the channel that was on when I clicked the TV on. Whatta inspiration.
It's always cool to see the winners, but I get more motivation from the regular Kona IronMan finishing. That was great!!

I agree. NBC did a GREAT job with their coverage. The story of the guy with Lou Gehrig's disease was really touching. Normally when sports programs do those types of human interest stories, I find them to be a distraction and wish they'd just focus on the frontrunners. Wasn't the case with this though. They covered all of the bases well. Now I'm pumped for my LSD run tomorrow!

I love the portrail of these people. Yes, there's the elites who seem immortal (until you get two flats on the bike), but there's also the next-door neighbor, the soccer mom, the person with the "disability", there's everyone there. And they're doing it.
What's better is why they do it. They don't have to do it, they just want to do it. Anyone that can put themselves through 10+ hours of heat and pain because they want to deserves a lot of respect.
For me, it's my annual inspiration that kicks my a$$ into gear again, reminding me why I want to do an Ironman some day.

The 80 yr. old man who finished it (the oldest person to have ever done so), and a guy in his mid 30s who has Lou Gehrig's disease (and will likely die within the next few years)... are the people who I find inspiring.
The top athletes always finish at top athlete time but it's the unlikely sports heroes that I always end up rooting for.
What are you thoughts on the guy that cried when he got a flat tire?

Stadler cracked from the pressure. He was out to prove that his win last year wasn't a fluke, he was already hurting and behind, then he got a flat which he couldn't change (apparently, the tubular tire was glued on way too strongly), then he gets a second flat (which was a clincher tire. since he rides tubulars normally, he didn't have spare tubes) and a bee sting. Seriously bad luck. I'd probably still liked to have seen him suck it up and finish, but when your only goal is to win or place, I can understand thinking about packing it in and focusing on the next race.
