So, if, say, I bought my wife an Ipod for her birthday is an Ipod useable with a non Apple computer?
Q2: to be able to walk/run with an MP3 player it would have to be smaller, right? Like an Ipod mini or some other model?
Q3: Are there some cheaper models in the < $100 range?

A1 yes, however it's only from Itunes.com you can get playable songs
A2 not really needs to be smaller, there are arm bands to hold it on the bi-cep
A3 the cheapest o know is the Ipod Shuffle $99.00 but is also very small, the size of a pack chewing gum
Thank Miss Steph and the research i did for her regarding Ipods.

not true, any mp3 will play on it, from anywhere.
I haven't gotten a single one of my songs from iTunes, yet they are all on my iPod...

I read that trhey had changed that to prevent pirating and Peer 2 peer echanges?

new models changed that. original ones allowed from any location. at least that was what i was reading from some review |
Well...I just had to replace my mini because of a battery issue, and they gave me a brand-spankin' new one, and I can still hear all my original stuff.

Are there cheaper non-ipod models (other than the shuffle) for under $100 that would be good on the go?

When you're talking "non-ipod", do you mean any mp3-player?
I'm not techo-whiz, so somebody else fill in the cracks here, is there more to ipods than music?

ipod happens to be one of the pricier, and in some cases, more fragile one.

Yes. I had a discman once, and that's about as complex I've had to be for portable music. Ipod is what my wife has said, but I think she's just looking for portable music.

This may have already been answered but....
My Ipod Shuffle was $99 and works with my IBM format computer. It works like and is the size of a jump drive. While I've only had it for 4 days, I <heart> it very much.

No. It's like Ipod Lite - you can set it for shuffle or have it play the songs in the order they were loaded. That's it. But...any more bells and whistles than that and you're asking for trouble where I am concerned.
On/Off
Play/Stop
Shuffle/Strait
Volume Up/Down
It holds 120 songs and has a 12 hour battery life that seems to take no time at all to charge.
