Posted: 06/17/04 - 10:19 Post subject: Interview tomorrow!
And I'm already NERVOUS...You know the pre-college tests you may or may not have had the pleasure of taking...they are administering some type of test and the interview is to last 3 hours. I hated those tests....despite that I always did well in school...I became so nervous before these tests. This is for a huge software company called Epic. When I moved on to the second interview for the job the HR specialist said about the tests:
20 Q's is a programming language that
> teaches a concept and then asks a question
I'm like, ok...??? and that you really can't study for this. I'd like to study for this! This job would start $$$ higher than a position as a librarian, but it would be very demanding because it's a software trainer position. I'd have to travel.
Anyway, any advise to get me through this interview? Did I say I was nervous? You know what, my friend's mom started this company and I know the family. I haven't breathed a word of it to my friend because I want to get the job on my own and if I'm not a good fit I don't want to take it. Anyway, my friend's mom is now worth literally millions. I was just in kindergarten when she had a bunch of computers networked in her basement and was writing the programs herself. Now it's a worldwide corporation, Epic Corporation.

Look at it like a race. You know how you are all nervous before the gun goes off. Channel (and I hate that term) that nervousness into the test.
You were that way before the two races we've been in together. And you've done fine in them. I have no doubt you will handle this just as well, if not better.

Go Shelly! Go Shelly!
This may not be much help, but how could you NOT be nervous?
I have a good friend who used to do a lot of acting. She always said that that scared nervous feeling right before she went on stage was GREAT, and if she ever got to a point where she no longer felt that way, she'd quit acting.
Nervous is ok. It puts you on edge, gets the blood going, pumps the adrenaline. It means you care. Means you know you've got a shot at it.
Incapacitated is not ok.
When is it? We can send you extra Karma points that day.

Sweetie, you've already done the tough part--they called you back for a second, so that means they like you.....just relax and don't pressure yourself. If it was meant to be, it will happen--you know everything happens for a reason. Sounds like this would be a good fit for you and something different and challenging to really sink your teeth into. You don't need to study for this, you've got a Master's degree, hon....you know how to think on your feet.
Deep breath....just be your wonderful, brilliant, engaging self during the interview and DO NOT stress over the other part and you will do just fine. If they don't absolutely love you, then it's their loss for sure. And I highly doubt that most of the people going for this job have any more experience with the software than you do, so R-E-L-A-X......
Remember, you wouldn't be getting back in this time around if they didn't see potential the first time. Think about that whenever you start to panic.

You'll be fine.
I used to get SO nervous before games in college. Didn't want to let the team down. Had to remember everyone's assignments. Had to play hard, remember technique, and not make fundamental mistakes.
For a while it worried me, but then I had an epiphany. I hope this helps:
Nerves are just your body's way of focusing. When you feel your muscles tense and your body get tight, it is your biological response to getting ready for combat. As a result of these nerves, you are left sharper, more focused, and more capable than you were before.
Don't fear nerves. Embrace them, and use them to your advantage.

1) Walk in with confidence! When you look confident...everyone sees it.
2) Mock Interview Questions: Try to think about every possible question you might be asked. Go through your head and answer them. You might want to write possible questions down and then answer them first on paper. Next, I'd have a family member or friend take me through "mock" interviews with those questions. This helped out a great deal when first going through the interviewing process. That way you're not stumbling for words.
Good Luck!
You'll do great!

Keep in mind that it's called an "interview," but it's really a "sales presentation." You're selling yourself (the only time such a thing would be socially acceptable ), so do your best to differentiate yourself from what your concept of the average Jane Schmoe is and show them why you're the best one for the job.
You can do it! Good luck!
