Posted: 01/19/04 - 14:08 Post subject: Installing Windows 2.0
So this year we're spending all the extra cash we don't have on exterior home improvements.
I got a quote on gutters last week. Who knew bent aluminum could be so expensive?
Had a guy from Home Depot come out on Friday and give me a quote on installing replacement vinyl windows. I'd replaced a couple of the really bad ones a few years before, but the thought of having to install 14 more in a limited time frame seemed a little more than I wanted to do. I showed the Home Depot guy one of the windows that I had already installed a few years ago and his quote was, "Why don't you just do them all yourself? Your most expensive window is about $200 from the store and we're going to charge you about $500 EACH to install them." (do the math. $300 labor per window x 14 windows = $4200 labor)
He may not be a very good salesman, but he was brutally honest about saving me some money. He said that most people that pay to have windows replaced don't know how to do it or are too old to do the work involved.
So anyway kids, I installed 2 new windows this weekend and I've got 2 more in the garage that are waiting on me.

The folks at HD are usually quite up front about such things. At least I've seen that too.
Great you are able to do them yourself!

$500 labor thats crazy. I paid $300 per installed a few years ago for 10 windows.
Get a few more quotes. My first was $800/window also.

Yeah you got jacked on the price. Unless the window is superior or you are getting 15 foot windows for the Hayes estate, they are pricing themselves too high to not get jobs.
Most laborers or GC would do it for much cheaper.
I understand it is not to hard to do. I will likely have my bro in law show me on a few of ours then start replacing one at a time here.

How 'bout the gutter quote? Can we rant on that too?
Next summer, I'll prolly re-do our house and the addition from last year. But it'll be vinyl and I expect the 150' or so should end up around $400 with brackets and all.

HA! I've got a little less than 200 ft. of gutters and the nice people from the gutter company wanted $5,500 to install new gutters (and that price didn't include the downspouts). It was a really high-pressure sales pitch. They keep calling back to see if we've decided. Mrs. decided last night that they could go butt a stump for being so obnoxious.
