in Cary, NC. This will be my first race and I'm doing the 10K.

Any suggestions for a first timer?

Have fun; take in the atmosphere, the festivities of the event.

And remember, you're not running against everyone else. Run your run - the adrenaline of the race itself will make your time faster than you think.

First of all...Good Luck and I hope you do well! I hope you enjoy your first race and will look forward to your report.

Second...Start Slow! That's what all the pros here keep saying. I know I haven't run my race yet, but that's what I read each and every time. I'm going to go on that advice in January.

Very Happy

The was my first ever race and my goal was to finish in under 60 minutes for the 10k.

Race Report:

Met Tony (my BIL) at 7am to head over to the race site together. The race start is at 7:30am. We got stuck in traffic due to a wreck near the course and struggled to find a parking spot . Thankfully, I'm an environmentally irresponsible SUV owner, so we hopped to curb and parked on a hill near some woods.
We run the 1/2 mile from the parking spot to the gathering area as a warmup and the start time was pushed back to 7:45 on account of the wreck and a few parking issues.
The races starts on time, "Jeez, that's a lot of people"
The first 1/2 mile or so of the course runs by the restaurant that is preparing the post-race feast. They were well underway in preparing the meal and all we could smell was food. That is wrong on so many levels.
The first 1.5 miles are on a slight uphill grade and the herd thins out after a mile or so. I find my rhythm pretty quickly, right around the 2 mile mark.
Tony is a personal trainer and was running along basically to help pace me and call out splits every mile or so. I didn't have many thoughts, I was just trying to keep in a good rhythm and keep from gawking at the occasional eye candy Stalker
After about 4.5-5 miles I thought I was going to hit a wall. We were going at about 8:50-9:00 pace which was WAY faster than I thought I could do, and my legs were feeling it! We passes my Mom, sister and her 3 daughters who were cheering and pictur taking.
The course loop ends with the same first 1 mile incline followed by a u-turn and 3/4 mile downhill stretch to the finish. We picked up our pace with about 1.5 miles to go and the last 1/4 mile were all-out as fast as I could go. Tony was just in front of me barking out drill-instructor commands until I crossed the finish line.

Results:
Chip time: 00:52:51 (08:31 pace) Dancing Banana
143rd overall, 11th in my division!!! (25-29 year olds)

After we streched, we devoured every bit of food we could find. The restaurant made bowtie pasta, crab cakes, fruit salad. I got lots of Propel, a bunch of bananas and a really kick @ss adrenaline high!

The afternoon will find me munching on some veggie chips sipping on some Carolina Lager from the microbrewery down the road.
