Posted: 05/27/03 - 16:07 Post subject: Injuries...
The situation: About 7 weeks ago I felt a funny little pain in my left knee while running. The pain wasn't anything big so I keep running, if felt like a tight muscle to be exact. That night I could barely bend my knee and for the rest of the week I was in a lot of pain. By Sunday I was feeling much better so I decided to try running again. The running hurt but I figured is was just a nagging pain (like a moron) and ran 5 miles. The pain did easy eventually. That night my knee swelled up big time.
Well on Friday I went to see the Surgeon to review my MRI on my knee. The MRI scan showed nothing major wrong with the knee. The Dr. said there was on spot that could cause some pain in the area I am having pain. He said my options at this point were to wait and see or get an injection test. The injection test is where they inject your knee capsule with some Lidocaine. This numbs the area and if the pain goes away then it most likely would be something that can be fixed with knee surgery. If not then most likely it is a soft tissue problem. So he shot me up with the Lidocaine and I really didn't see any improvement in the pain.
I guess this is good news because I don't need surgery but the only thing left to do at this point is wait it out. I will still be going to physical therapy every week and doing what I can to help it along. This wait and see is just killing. I have been very depressed since it happened and even had to cancel out of Madison because of it.
Have you been injuried before and experienced major depression from it? If so what helped you over come it until you could run again? Most cross training is out as it is the flexing of the knee that hurts.
Thanks,

That sucks, dude. I would concentrate on upper body curls with all the great beer you have up there until you're healthy again.
I've been fortunate to have only one injury (my first, Achilles problem) that prevented me from running. It is very hard to stay inside when you know you have to. Chin up, and here's wishing you a fast recovery.

Why, oh why, do i feel your pain?
this couldn't have happened to a nicer guy either -
sorry the injection test was a flop.
i would tend to think a depression would be completely normal for someone who is so physically active to lose that activity.... (ask my husband; he was probably the most happy to get me back in the game) I was depressed and depressed because i was depressed -- after all, it was only running i lost and not a body part. You know, things could be a H of a lot worse kinda thing.....
i forced myself to begin an upper body strengthing program and i really believe that helped me emotionally. at least i was feeling stronger but i really never stopped feeling like "i'll never run again"..... i musta said that 100 times. my husband was like
as soon as i felt the slightest bit of recovery in my knee, that helped too. a tiny bit of progress - like a mile without pain - that helped alot.

sorry to hear that Paul,
at this very moment I'm chatting with a friend online and we are discussing the benefits of certain herbal supplements: yohimbe and valerian root. yohimbe to burn fat stores (has the side effect of increased ) and valerian root to reduce anxiety and stress it won't necessarily help your knee, but it could relieve some of the depression about it.

A bit of advice I stumbled across quite a while back when dealing with injuries is to "do something everyday" to help you recover. Too often it's easy to go hum-drum and put it out of your mind and get lost in other things, but I've found I feel better when I take offense instead of defense. So everyday, whether it means being diligent about icing, pt, cross-training, or whatever, be sure to do something to keep rolling down the road to recovery.

You and I have swapped knee horror stories before. I can definitely relate to the depression part. After surgery #2 had some complications, I definitely got depressed, and felt way, way to sorry for myself. I didn't work out at all, gained an obscene amount of weight, and was generally just miserable. ( Ihave finally lost all that weight, thank goodness, took over a year though)
Have you gotten a second opinion? It may be worth it. I'm glad you don't need surgery, but there may be other options to speed up your recovery. For me, it was a 3rd surgery, but it worked! Maybe you need a new Dr, a new PT, or a new sport. (temporary, I mean) I did water aerobics, and it was the only place my knee didn't hurt, and that I felt somewhat normal.
I'd definitely say what you're going through is normal, and I hope it doesn't last long!!

thanks all for your support. I am definitely fighting the depression but it is good to see I am not the only one who has felt this way. (misery loves company) I have been PTing my rear off and devoting my running time to other exercises, like lifting and lawn cutting. I am getting stronger it is just a matter of waiting for my knee to catch up.
Thanks again!

When you run out of lawn, you are invited to come down here and do mine. I will pay you with BEER and free lodging!
