Posted: 01/23/05 - 20:07 Post subject: Initial program
I've been out of shape for a few years now, I'm 5'7, 180 lbs, 21 years old.
I don't think I'm horribly out of shape, but I want to get back into an excercise program before it gets to the point where I get health problems and have a hard time physically doing exercise. My main problem seems to be motivation to keep going regularly.
In high school (2000-2001) I ran every other day and had about a 9:30 mile. Not that great, but I can't even imagine what my mile is now!
Obviously exercise is only part of it, and I need to eat healthy, but I did have a few starting questions.
How can I ensure that I'm reducing my BMI, rather than muscle mass?
Is running in the morning more beneficial than running in the evening or does it not matter at all?
Should I eat before running? After?
As far as running shoes go, I have wide feet and these $18 reebok shoes are what I have been wearing so far. They were in the "running" section, but I doubt they're ideal or anything. I buy them because they fit, whereas I have trouble with other shoes sometimes. I did a quick google and they look somewhat like these: http://www.billthehatter.com/usrimage/0mvc-902f.jpg
I was going to run 5 days a week. 5 minute warmup, 20 minute jogging pace, 5 minute warmdown. After a few weeks I was going to increase that to 25 minutes, then ultimately 30 minutes. Does this sound like a reasonable plan, or should I be doing something else to more effectively lower my BMI? For the moment, I'm not so much concerned with getting a faster mile or anything, just reducing fat for now.
I'm sure most of these questions have already been answered on earlier posts so I'm going to browse around and do some searchings. Just wanted to start up a topic for any advice first since I'm going to be starting tomorrow.
