Posted: 09/29/03 - 11:33 Post subject: Info needed Teaching in Alaska
Hey gang, in the never ending list of possibilites and options the mrs. and I are considering...
A former boss of my wife's is the superintendent and principal of a small school in Kake, Alaska. He's been there four or five years, and always tells my wife that if we want to go there, he would hire us both in a minute.
He's a really great guy, and a good principal.
We have always said we didn't want to go that far away from home, but started talking about it yesterday, and the opportunity is now something we both wish to look into.
Kake is a real small town on a small island 90 miles S of Juneau. It's a Native American community (Tlinket, I believe).
Does anyone know anyone who has taught in Alaska, or have any info. I've looked up a few things on the net. But not much info there. Just wondering if anyone had any experiences or knew anyone who had experiences with working up there.

Don't know anything about teaching up there, but I can imagine how awesome the running must be. Cold weather, surrounded by tons of beautiful snow....

I was pretty pleased with the schools in Alaska. I think the teachers are paid fairly well.
Juneau has a great climate, but if you are on an island, you need to find out just how isolated you will be. It can be mind-numbing if you are too isolated.
Also, there are some cultural differences that I'll pm you about that you should keep in mind.

Just looked up and saw where Alaska is in the Top 10 for teaching salaries. I'll keep looking.
