Posted: 07/06/03 - 17:09 Post subject: Indiana Downs Sprint Triathlon Series - July 6th
Today was the second in the Indiana Downs Sprint Triathlon Series. Short recap - Placed 106 out of 268 competitors with at time of 1:34:25. I was 9th out of 14 in my age group.
I missed the first and decided that I should do at least this one. The race consisted of a 800m swim, 17mi bike, and 3mi run. Now, the thing to keep in mind is I have only swam once in the last year!
I was in the first wave of swimmers. I kept up for about 200m and then the group began to drop me and the other weak swimmers. At that point, I had to give up on the free-style and do whatever felt comfortable. As people from the other waves passed me, a girl that I rode down with passed me and told me to get moving. I stayed right behind her feet for a short while. It did help me get into the transition. I ended up finishing the swim in 26:36. That was the 256th best time out of 268 competitors. OUCH!
When I hopped on the bike, I quickly learned that my bike speedometer was broke. The only thing I had was my cadence sensor to tell me how fast my feet were spinning. I focused on keeping the cadence between 90 and 105 and since I was one of the last out of the water, I was passing people like crazy! I ended up with a bike time of 48:32. That was the 68th best time out of 268 competitors. Getting better.
When I finished the bike, I took off on the run with a plan to just run what was comfortable. Once again, I was passing people, but didn't think anything of it. My side kept getting sore, but I would focus on my breathing and then it would go away for a short time. One guy recognized me from cross country (THAT WAS 4 YEARS AGO WHEN I RAN CROSS COUNTRY!). As I came up to the last 2 turns, I turned on the heat (as if the 85 degree day wasn't enough) and finished very strong. My run time was 19:17 (that's a 6:25 average!). That was the 16th best time out of 268 competitors! WOW!
My final time was 1:34:25. I really need to work on my swim to get it up to where my other events are. If it was where it should be, I could have been top 50 overall and around 5th in my age group. I am planning on swimming twice a week once school starts up and will bike 3-4 times a week. Next year, I will be up at the top.

Wow, the run and the bike were great. Work on that swim and you'll knock 'em dead next year.

Great Job!
I wish I could even swim 800 meters. I would probably end up drowning! If you train a little in the coming year you can probably kick a$$!

great work kobyi! You did well on the bike and run. I suck at swimming too but I bet if you keep up the training, you should see some big improvement!

Swimming would be my weakest link as well. Guess I'd need to bike first, as well! Congrats on a great time!
