with taking a class like criminal law is that you have to read an awful lot of cases that deal with very disturbing subject matter and even if you normally have a pretty positive view of humankind you nevertheless cannot help but come away with the sense that there are a lot of truly f*cked up people out there!

Yep, I guess that would do it. I don't think I would be able to handle that. How did you?

I'm shocked it took a class for you to know that. Just look around; it's easy to see.

It's not hard to see there are weird people out there or somewhat troubled, but truly demented like the people in these cases is not that easy to see, for me.

You don't have to work in a jail, or read about it in a book. Just sit in any public place with a cup of coffee and watch. What you see will truly horrify you.

I just can't understand, on a personal level, the mental state required to commit these horrific crimes. And frankly, I hope I never do.

What never ceases to astound me are the parents who continually send their 1st/2nd graders to school in weather-inappropriate clothing, no lunch/no lunch money, send them dirty and unwashed, etc, etc.

I would go without food if it meant the difference of my kid having a coat or not.

I hear you, Go. This semester (Legal Research), I've come across some pretty awful cases. It's hard to get through them sometimes.

It really enforces that I don't want to be in that area of law. I just don't think I could deal with this stuff on a daily basis.

You won't want to work in state hospital then either. Sad Saw and heard some pretty scary stuff there, and the last time I did inpatient too. What some people are capable of doing to their own children would make you want to puke

But it does give you real perspective on your own small piece of the world, no? I know it always did for me.
