You make an awful lot of assumptions, and they're all tinged with racism and classism and intolerance. Ew.

I agree.

There is a landscaping company here in IntolerantWhiteBreadHoopyville that recently started using Spanish speaking workers. I think this is the first summer that I've noticed them working there. So I see them at the grocery store occasionally. I smile and say hello thinking I want to make them feel welcome because, sheesh, they probably feel so isolated. That's all. Well, except that I hope to have the opportunity to strike up a conversation with them (in either language). I doubt I will though because I can't afford landscaping service and I can't afford plants from a nursery (I get mine from the woods or neighbors).

Ultimately it's the landscaping company's responsibilty to hire (or train) qualified and legally residenced workers.

One can only hope, Sahara, and I agree......but he sure got wiggy when I mentioned INS.

And for the record, since I know this is just another opportunity for some of our more vocal liberals to go off on another attack rant, I was never ever anything but polite to these guys anytime they and I happened to be outside at the same time. I always smiled, said good morning, nice day, whatever....and went on my way, which is what pissed me off even more at the fact that this really looks like a deliberate act of disrespect, even more so than just a careless act of incompetence, given that they were here on two separate days and did damage both times. And as far as WHAT I said and HOW I phrased it, I feel it really ironic that MY right to free speech does not count since it "offended" some folks, yet those same folks have in the past used the "free speech" line when others of us here have spoken up in defense of those that were injured personally here by people's comments. Make of that what you like, I could care less.

Apparently they just do really sloppy work.....which is WRONG no matter who you are or where you come from, and that's the bottom line here really. They were here again mowing this morning so I stayed home and watched until they were finished and it was a total whan bam thank you ma'am job. Real nice considering part of our association fee pays their salaries.

those unwashed pieces of sh*t back to whatever Godforsaken third world country they came from.

Shocked Really nice. I can understand being frustrated at someone for their incompetence, so why not just leave it at that? [/b]

Sounds to me like calling a spade a spade. Sometimes the truth isn't very pretty.

No one said you couldn't say what you did. But if you think you're never held accountable for your words, think again. With rights come responsibility, and I thought you abrogated yours.

Your First Amendment rights aren't in question. You may well have a legitimate problem with the workers, but their ethnicity isn't a part of it. Calling INS or threatening to is ridiculous. Your response to this whole thing is over the top and racist, that's all. But certainly you have the legal right to be ridiculous just as others have to the right to call you on it.

No one is going off on a rant, unless you count you. No one else is sending burning mad emoticons.

It doesn't make you a better person to be nice to one's face, but talk the dog about them behind their back. That just makes you a bona fide hypocrite.

You're right, sloppy work is wrong. Too bad you couldn't keep it to that.

And "could care less" is inaccurate, I think, given what you're trying to say. I think you mean that you couldn't care less. If you could care less, you would, right?

If they are here illegally (even if an assumption) then why would be calling INS be ridiculous? People call the police for suspicious activity all the time.

There are legal means to enter the country, and if you can't follow them you have no right to be here. I have no problem with people immigrating to this country, but do so in a legal way.

What if the workers were unwashed dirty white boys from the local trailer park and Genie noted that? Would anybody be getting bent over that? Would that also be racist?

That would be classist, if she were arguing that their inefficiency was based on their living in a trailer park.

In the county I live in, you couldn't get a house built, your yard mowed or clean dishes at a restaurant if it weren't for illegals.

I don't think she was arguing that their inefficiency was based on anything to do with their background. It sounded to me like a description of the workers, nothing more and nothing less. Maybe a bit harsh for some people but oh well.

Well, as usual, you're either referring to something completely irrelevant to this particular topic or you're not hearing what I said, and I can't be bothered repeating it again so whatever. Being nice to someone until they do something to piss you off and THEN talking smack about them is not being hypocritical, it's changing your mind based on changing circumstances. Twist that any way you like. I really don't have anything else to say.....and as far as your opinion, you're certainly entitled to it, but I don't care what you think and it's not going to make me feel any differently, so......have at it. As far as I'm concerned this is a dead issue after I hit send. if you want to go on about it all day, go for it. I have better things to do.

We have the Amish folks covering a lot that ground around here. Illegals work in the chicken processing plants.

That's good. I'm pretty sure you've said enough. It must be great to apply one set of standards to yourself and another to everyone else. But I gotta give you credit for trying to spin this into something else, anything else, to get the limelight off the fact that you made racist statements.

Same here. And it was the same in Columbus. Most of the kitchen crew were Hispanic up there, and Hispanic, Haitian, and Jamaican down here. They all have papers. Are they legal? WHo knows?

I know they're performing jobs that most legal, American born citizens would sniff their noses at, and they work very hard. The resort/construction/boating economies down here would cease to function if the work requirements were limited to those born in this country.

I found a few comments here hard to swallow. Confused

I live in a state where there are tons of illegals running around and working at very cheap rates. I also have to deal with them not speaking the English language, which can be frustrating at times. However, it would be hard for me to call them "unwashed pieces of s... and to go back to the third world they came from".... That is harsh, IMO. I see the frustrations here and know them. I feel that this was clearly venting here that was a little bit harsh.
