Most of Phelps' "congregation" are relatives and family members.

Not hardly. They are exactly what they appear to be - a group of far-right, ignorant, prejudiced jackasses, spewing hatred and violence. They used to protest at the gay pride parade in Columbus, Ohio, carrying signs that read "AIDS - god's gift to homosexuals". Real class act. Hardly what Christians are supposed to represent. Or, if it is, I certainly don't want any part of it.

They represent the worst of Christianity just like the terrorists represent the worst of Islam.
If Muslims aren't to be judged by their terrorists, then Christians shouldn't either.

Very good point. The extremists of every group get the most publicity, as planned, and show the rest of the world a slanted and untrue picture of the majority. It's unfortunate when people make decisons about a majority based on an extremist minority.
Edited to add that I saw "Pastor Fred" up close at one parade in Columbus. I was skating in the parade with another male friend, who was actually straight, in support of a gay male friend of ours. The ignorant ass "pastor" yelled at both of us "What do you call gays on Rollerblades? Roll-AIDS."
(I pointed out that they were not Rollerblades, they were Salomons, but he didn't get the distinction. OK, that last line was a joke.)

He's an azzhat. I think the media just loves to pull out the worst of every group and parade them as "the standard" for that group.
I know African Americans who cringe every time Jesse or Al step up to the mike--but the media would have us believe that they speak for all African Americans.

The mainstream news media is about generating ad revenue, not presenting the public with the truth. Unfortunately, the majority of people are more likely to stop and watch a story about one hate filled lunatic than a story about the numerous Christian homeless outreaches or Christian youth centres. That's why the one lunatic will always get news coverage but the homeless shelters and youth centres only get mentioned on a VERY slow news day, if at all. As a result, the public is presented a very skewed image of reality. This is particularily bad for the large portions of the public who believe the news media is still a credible source of information.
The lunatics being talked about in this thread shouldn't be associated with the teachings of Christ or Christianity for that matter just because they say they're Christians. I also wouldn't say they have very much to do with the extreme right. They're just a bunch of people being led to believe untruths by one individual who clearly has some sort of pathological disorder. Many of them are probably being emotionally manipulated or worse, either that or just don't have the intellectual faculty to think for themselves. Its frustrating and even infuriating what they're doing - its hard, but I always have to try to remind myself that Christ teaches to not even hate these people. We should, however, do what we can to stop them from spreading hate.
The media could play a role in stopping the hate but hey're too busy emotionally manipulating the populace and taking advantage of people who don't have the intellectual faculty to think for themselves.

No, He doesn't. That's why I think these "Christians" are going to be very surprised at God's reaction to their behavior when it comes time for an accounting...

Maybe I should prepare a deluxe spreadsheet with a power point presentation.
