I had a 7 1/2 mile training run today. We didn't time the first 1/2 mile.
Here were my splits after the first 1/2 mile -
Mile 1 - 7:30
Mile 2 - 7:23
Mile 3 - 7:23
Mile 4 - 7:28
Mile 5 - 6:32
Mile 6 - 6:32
Mile 7 - 6:07
My XC races are 3 miles long. My PR in XC last season was 18:30, and that was at the end of the season, when I was at my peak.
After already running 4 1/2 miles, I was still able to do 19:11 - and this was after already running 4 1/2 miles at a good pace AND after only a few workouts since my 4 week long rest after track season ended.
It looks like I will be able to run sub-17 for sure, which will put me as I think the top freshman, and one of the top people overall. Come senior year......ooohhhhh....dont even mess with me.

I think it was Bill Rodgers that used to often say (and back it up with wins) that he was only ever as good as his last race.
There's got to be a local 5km this summer for you to use as a proving grounds. Toe the line and put your money where your mouth is
