Posted: 01/31/03 - 08:21 Post subject: I will be off most of the day today because I am taking Abby
for a sedated hearing test.
She has had several hearing tests and has failed them. They need to put her asleep and check her hearing before they make any conclusions. So I will be at AI Dupont hospital in Delaware with her today for that. This is non invasive and not a big deal.
I talked to the admitting nurse yesterday and she was actually taken aback by how laid back I was. She finally asked how many surgeries has Abby had. I said over 25. She said oh no wonder you know all the answers to the questions right away and are so easy with this. She deals a lot with first time surgery kids and parents and not us "pros" like me and Abby.
I will update when I get home

Why do they have to put her to sleep to check her hearing? How will they know if she hears anything if she's asleep?s
FWIW - My youngest has a hearing problem too. She's got a bell shaped hearing curve and certain frequencies she can't hear very well. It's weird what she'll pick up and miss in a conversation.

I'm sorry that you're such a pro at all this. In the process though, you have also become an inspiration.
Good luck today.

They measure responses in the brainstem using EEG.

Here is the update. Abby has almost normal hearing in her right ear and moderate hearing loss in the left ear. Nothing the do at this time for it. It is really not bad because we just adjust things with therapy to make sure they talk on the right.
The test took over an hour and a half, we think because they wanted to verify the results to make sure. (best guess based on my experience with testing an docs).
She did fine. In recovery the first thing I did was take all of her leads off, picked her up and held her to calm her down. The nurses all knew us and Abby and knew she was okay to be off leads for a few minutes. She was very upset and just needed some time with her daddy and to be left alone by all these people who kept messing with her. I told everyone to just leave us alone for 5 minutes and everything would be okay. You know what, she was better, all calmed down and was able to be put back down so they could finish up with her.
Abby and I have this one rule about hospitals. Nothing bad happens to her while I am holding her. When I hold her, people just back off because they have learned that she needs me sometimes to calm her down and I refuse to hold her in my arms while they do any tests on her. I will hold her down on a table but not hold her down in my lap. It has worked well and she always calms down.
She is home resting now and getting her Sesame Street on.

You are one strong father, Joe. Glad to hear you take control in those situations. It's making everything for Abby that much easier to deal with.

Man, that's a great idea Joe. I'm sure she feels super safe in your arms! Sounds like you're not too down about the results so they must not be that bad, yes?
