Posted: 05/09/04 - 19:56 Post subject: I went to the dentist yesterday...
for a cleanup and checkup and she found out that
(1) there was a small cavity in my right molar- my 1st one so far! (I was cavity-free for the last 20 years of my life)
(2) More importantly, the thing that I have been dreading for has finally come..my wisdom teeth have grown and looks like I have to get all 4 of them top and bottom extracted later this summer. The 2 bottom ones are positioned at an angle and they won't be growing anymore- they need to go (according to my dentist). Any wisdom teeth-survivors out there willing to share their stories?

I had my top 2 taken out by the regular dentist. This was actually worse than the extracation of the bottom 2 by the oral surgeon. I remember hearing cracking, crunching, and seeing the dentist sweat(literally) as he tugged and tugged. He actually took a break it was so difficult. The oral surgeon experience was much more pleasant. One word..................DRUGS! They knock you out, yank and or dig/cut those babies out and you're done. No big deal. I have heard horror stories though.

All 4 at the same time. All four were impacted.
I remember very little of it.

Had my top 2 done by a regular dentist. A couple of shots of novacaine [sp?] and a quick flick of the wrist and they were out. I went out to a company function later that evening. No pain at all - just a little blood.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth taken out in the military during the 70's using just novacain. They took out two one weekend and two the next. Provided the wisdom teeth are not impacted it's not a big deal. Three of mine came out easy and I had minimal discomfort. The fourth was impacted and I had the impression the dentist was using a crowbar to get the thing out (I had a towel draped over my eyes so I didn't see exactly what he was doing.)
After the novacain wore off on the impacted one I did have to put my mouth into my pillow to avoid moaning that night but after that I was fine.
It's probably not as bad as you think. It's more emotional than anything else. Relax.

my son is having all four of his removed next month. he's 16 and i'm told the earlier you do it, the better it is. the MD tells me he will have all four of his "teeth" out in 15 minutes
i had four removed myself, 2 had grown in and two were impacted. the two that had grown thru have affected my alignment even today.
as far as post-op goes my surgeon tells me the best way to help recovery is to use frozen peas to pack your jaw with....buy 6 bags and use two every hour --- rotate them. he reco's wearing a hoodie and shoving the frozen packs in alongside each jaw. he swears this helps with recovery. that and staying off your feet for at least two days. um, no running
my son will be packed in peas whether he likes it or not.

When they took out three of my four molars (none impacted but one coming in -growing out? - at a 90* angle), I only remember it sounding like a crowbar prying some wood off the walls. That, and asking the dentist if I could get a six-pack of the nitrous oxide.
If they put you under (totally), so much the better.

I had all 4 taken out by an oral surgeon. They knocked me out and the next thing I know they were out. By the next day I was mowing my lawn!!! Mrs. Boiler woke up from and nap and was like . After a few days I was eating solids again and back to normal, (well as normal as I usually am)
Take full advantage of an oral surgeon so they can knock you out!

one out by the dentist.....fully awake, and I must have been . The dentist was practically on top of me yanking my jaw one way and the other. And when he got it out he called to his staff to look at the tooth. The roots where literally wrapped around my jawbone and he was so proud to get it in one piece w/o breaking my jaw. He sent me to the oral surgeon for the other one...totally out....and took over an hour to come to....scaring the cr@p out of him. I remember him being frustrated because he'd ask my name and I had no idea, so he couldn't send me packing until I could tell him.
Never got the other two. ???
